    Hi all,

I know all these programs will run, and work very basic tasks but I was wondering how well the Atom processor handles extended heavier use of them? I'm not talking extremely heavy industrial use, just kinda professional work as opposed to just clicking a few buttons to see if it runs ok. It's very important as I'm looking to get an Aspire One for Uni where I do web programming, database work, flash programming/animation, image editing/creation, etc.

If anyone has tested anything else that is equally or more intensive than these can be then that would help determine if the Atom would be ok too.

    Thanks

Photoshop runs very well, as does InDesign, Illustrator, and Flash CS3. Haven't tried Dreamweaver, but it should run without issue.

Heck, even AutoCAD 2008 runs very well on the One!

    Thanks, good to know!

Do you know how the battery copes with these applications in heavy use? 3-cell battery is not too great to begin with doing basic browsing etc, so was just curious.

Multitasking any good with 1GB of RAM? 3+ programs like PS, Firefox, Flash CS3 loaded at once.

    thanks again :)

The battery holds out pretty well, if not the same as usual, though im usually on AC power most of the time.

I've had firefox, PSCS3, MSN, and Itunes running without much issue. One gig of ram is more than enough for situations like that, heck, even on a similar laptop configuration i could run Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator at once with little/or no slowdown.

    Excellent, thanks!

Makes me wonder why they advertise them as just for browsing the internet and basic office work, when they can do so much more, doesn't make sense. Most reviewers say comments like "just don't try to do any Photoshop work on it" which is obviously a statement pulled out their ass.

Because if a nickle tiny laptop can do all that, why pay more for a faster larger laptop?

Very true, but millions of people buy high end computers when their not used for gaming. Many people will have Core Duo/Quad at 2.6Ghz+ when all they do is browsing, office work, etc. Same with RAM, many buying 4GB/8GB when it will never be used by the programs they use. Heck people are dying to get this dual quad core Intel platform when 90% of them probably barely utilise 2 of their cores nevermind 8!
There's also the screen and resolution to bare in mind too. I would kill myself if I had to permanently live with nothing but 1028x600 on a 8.9" at home, office, everywhere.

It's a risky proposition though. Advertise that its more powerful and could replace a full laptop for some people and you may lose some sales you may have had in full laptops. But then you may lose a lot of potential sales from by not advertising that it can perform all these other tasks, where they would not purchase a laptop (or an additional ultra portable one) at all.

Agreed, I don't believe this can replace a full size laptop, the screen alone is reason. I work with Photoshop/Dreamweaver daily Aspire screen just too painful for long periods of Photoshop work. It's good for the "quick" jobs. I use my Aspire when I travel or go on vacation, when I don't have to work extensively. This is the perfect solution for surfin and light work in a hotel room or at the cottage. I would say now, 85% of my travel, the AA1 comes with me, alone with my Blackberry, it's the dynamic duo :)

    My 2 cents.

What makes it painful for extensive PS work? The small resolution or small screen? Small screen wouldn't bother me at all, but if the low res makes things difficult I may have to wait out for a higher res netbook.

    Thanks

I have been running Photoshop with the 120GB HDD/1 GB Ram A1 model with no problems at all. I often use it with several Firefox tabs open, MS Word, Breezebrowser (image browser), etc running at the same time and have not encountered any performance issues. I have also tried Sony Vegas (video editing) on the One and it runs surprisingly well.

The biggest issue running Photoshop on the One is the small screen. But it is still very usable. However, I don't plan on using the One as my main photo editing machine, but more for occasional editing when traveling or when I am away from my laptop.

I use Lightroom and Photoshop on my AAOne...both run OK on it without any problems. Only "problem" is the screen estate that gets used up FAST.

MS Office runs well as well.

Running on 1.5GB and 120GB drive.

i wouldnt say they would lose any sales by neglecting to mention its ability to perform certain duties. anyone in the market for a computer, and they know they want to run photoshop for specific reasons, they certainly understand that a 1.6ghz with 1gb ram is very capable of such.

understating its capabilities doesnt do much to its sales. the only people who are effected are the 'dummies' (the people who dont have specific requirements for buying a notebook, they just need to browse the internet and such).

i run Photoshop CS3 on my AAone (120gb hdd, 1gb ram model). it runs just fine. although i dont like CS3, im going to switch back to CS2.

My AA1 (8gb SSD using EWF) is nippy with Office 2003 (OneNote in particular!) and Firefox. I'm thinking I might upgrade it to Office 2007 because I'm surprised how well its working!

    Hi RGGG,

Just a quick question -- when you run the various programs you mentioned -- do you also run an Anti virus and firewall program? If so which one do you use to protect your system?

I've just got my One and haven't had a chance to put an Anti virus/firewall program on it yet.

    Thanks for the answer

I use Comodo firewall. I would recommend no anti-virus on such a low-end laptop. Many have never used AV full stop, it just depends how careful you are, and who uses your PC.

You're safe for 99.999999% of the time if you don't visit free porn sites and download keygens and similar stuff.

Camera raw needs 1024x768 to function properly and the window cannot be resized so working with raw files leaves you without the option to adjust some features. Haven't tried Lightroom to do that yet with, perhaps that is the way to go for raw files and then edit them after in PS.

I would imagine CS3 beeing alot better for the aspire, with the all the palettes tucked away nicely in the side bar.

since screen size and rez seems to be the main issue here.

but, all this is good to hear, i was half expecting the need to pull out an old illustrator 8 or so to run on my aspire..

let me tell you what i do with my aspire one...since i got it its been like a dream come true i swear...as if something missing in my daily routine work just appeared and saved me from a lot of headaches and stress.
i do work primarily in 3D graphics design for architectural visualisation and work with autocad very often. I confirm one of the posts above about autocad running on aspire one very nice and smooth. its been such a fascinating expreience seeing clients' faces when suddenly you show up on site with an almost-pocket-size laptop and pullout their drawing in autocad and start discussing what goes where and how to re-position the walls as if its a normal everyday thing you do (which in fact it is). Some clients needed a minute or to to realize that i just pulled up their office floorplan on a mini screen and rotated the door right on spot! this is soooo great!!!
