    Hi,

Yesterday, I did uninstall my old version of PidGin 2.5 to install the newest.

I first did uninstall of libpurple and pidgin from the install/remove software.
Then, I used terminal and did:

    sudo yum update fedora-release

    sudo yum install pidgin

now I have installed pidgin - 2.5.2-1.fc8.i386 with proper liburple 2.5.2-1.fc8.i386 coming with it.

    Unfortunately, pidgin can't run.

Anyone has an explaination and a solution to fix this problem ?

    Thanks,
    within

You might try renaming .purple in your home directory so that Pidgin has to build a new one. Also, try launching pidgeon from the command line. Maybe that will give you some error messages that will help you find the problem.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for your response.

Renaming .purple dir did not help. Same result, new dir created, and still nothing.

with Terminal, I've got this, but don't know what to do.

    [user@localhost ~]$ pidgin
    <pph_request_handler> Current PPH threads: 2
    <pph_request_handler> Current PPH threads: 2
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_smileys_get_all

    any (new) advice?
    Thanks in advance

Not sure this will help you, but found this thread. Although it talks about Ubuntu, it appears to be a common problem. Someone in that thread suggests that removing libpurple fixes the problem. Read it here ...

Thanks for this thread, but the trick did not work for me,:

    [user@localhost ~]$ pidgin
    bash: pidgin: command not found

so, libpurple gone, it is like pidgin did not stay too

Pidgin is a dependency of libpurple and vice versa. So when you removed libpurple you also ended up removing Pidgin. Of course the thread on that page is talking about Ubuntu and how to accomplish ridding the system of libpurple the Ubuntu way and still keeping Pidgin. :)

I'm not sure how this is done with Fedora, that uses rpms? Maybe one just forces the removal of the libpurple package by doing something like this ....

    rpm e --nodep <packagename>.rpm

The --nodep switch says to remove that particular package but not any dependency it might have.

You could try reinstalling Pidgin again and then going to where the rpms are stored and running a command like I suggest? Of course, I haven't tried any of this, so you do so at your own risk. I'm not talking from an informed perspective. And all this is assuming that the "fix" the guy mentions will actually fix things.

    Cheers.
