i successfully installed it from the repository (and obtained finally a good IM experience :) ).

you have to uninstall first the old libpurple installed (and you will "loose" also that creepy AcerIM which is based on that) and then install pidgin.

Does all your other Acer software like the mail program and contacts program still work? I would also like to install regular Pidgin but don't want these other programs to stop working (except for the acerIM of course)

    ok

    1) in advanced mode go to Add/remove programs
    2) select search, find "libpurple" and deselct it
3)apply. it will uninstall libpurple and all the programs who are based on it (acerIM)
    4) now, install pidgin

    Ummm,.... a little help here....

After installing pidgin and running it smoothly, something strange happened. Some programs in the desktop are unable to run. Those programs are the mail client & calendar. They just wont open. When I click the icon, the loading wheel at the pointer just keep spinning for a time and then stops,... and nothing happen.

Any idea why such thing occurs? Is it because i removed libpurple? Can I get those programs work again?

    Thank U for your help.

Well,... if those apps wont start because of libpurple. Can we just re install it trough add/remove programs? And what is MSN anyway? where did you get it?

    Thank U.

I was trying to install Pidgin from the repository. But when verifying the dependencies (I didn't uncheck 'libpurple 2.2.x', btw) I get an error message that says that Pidgin can't be installed because it needs libpurple 2.4.x, which is not installed nor in the repository.
Has anyone else got that error and what can be done to fix it?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

as far as I can read here, there is no way given to install Pidgin.
I'm searching on pidgin website and says only fedoracore7 or below are available.
Linpus is based on fc8, and using command line 'yum install pidgin' it stops because of dependencies problems related to fc8.

I tried using the add/remove tool (packet manager) but still dependencies troubles; it seems there is no pidgin version compatible with the libpurple available.

some help is required here from people who says they succeeded installing pidgin.
    please, give step-by-step instructions as I'm a linux n00b :)

    cheers,
    within

I unistalled libpurple for pidguin and now I haven't Acer IM. Pidguin doesn't work properly with msn even id it works with other accounts (as googletalk). At moment aspire one has installed lippurble 2.4.x but Acer IM still doesn't work. How can I rescue the old libpurple and IM ?
I got the liveupdate but I can try without IM.

    weird.

today, a fix was available for windows messenger with AcerIM. I believe acer team fixed the libpurple dependencies with the IM of them. after update, my pidgin still works fine. I haven't tried with acerIM or anything else. I'll do and will tell you.
