Slight change of direction here! I have VLC 0.8.6 installed and running with no problems thanks to the many posters  But now I'm trying to update to VLC 0.9.4. I downloaded the rpms from VLC direct but haven't been able to solve all the dependencies ( :x ) and am now going round in a dependency loop. Any help would be great. cheers.

sry that i have to interrupt all the successes here with my vlc problem. I did not download the vlc player via the links metnioned above but downloaded it from acer's website. they made the installation quite simple. however, the player they distribute seems to be very simple, too.

i could not play ANY .avi files or anything similar. i then tried the links above to install vlc again...however my system then told me that the same version does already exist.

i then tried to delete vlc by looking at the live-update history (as explained by acer)...problem here: internal error occurred and the window closed. it does that from now on as it seems...

can anyone please help me? i simply want to watch some avi files...i would even be happy if anyone could tell me where to get the right codec for vlc and how to install it...

    thanks very much guys!!!

(yes i already posted the exact same text in a different forum...but i didnt get a reply there)

    Hmm ... what's wrong?

    I did:
    su -

    then
    rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    output was:
    Code:
    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh [url]http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm[/url]
    Retrieving [url]http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm[/url]

    Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
       1:livna-release ########################################### [100%]

    then after
    yum install vlc
    got this:
    Code:
    [root@localhost ~]# yum install vlc
    fedora                    100% |=========================| 2.1 kB    00:00

    Parsing package install arguments
    No package vlc available.
    Nothing to do

The contents of Livna have moved to RPM Fusion. If you issue*
    Code:
    sudo yum install rpmfusion-free-release rpmfusion-nonfree-release
and then try to install VLC again it should work.

    Also read:
    Byebye Livna, hello Fusion !
    Installing VLC & Mplayer

And a mod should really put this info in the first post ;)

    * This command only works for people that already added the Livna repositories. Look in the byebye Livna link to see what to type if you did not.

I am completely new to Linus, and have tried following the instructions on page one of this thread to no avail. I'm sure I'm missing a step. Is there an 'idiot-proof' step-by-step guide that can be *viewed* - either using screenshots or You Tube.

I've tried looking on you Tube, but with no luck. Like everyone else, all I want to do is view a few videos - so the simpler, the better!

    Thanks.

PS Followed GrimReaper's instructions on another thread, and it now works - fingers crossed. Thanks.

You're not kidding. Total linux noob here and it's just taken me more than an hour to find this little gem that allows me to finally install VLC :?

    To quote:

"In case you only get audio, but no video when playing a movie file, try disabling the compositing feature."

Read a few posts up, specifically the thing about Livna being replaced by rpm fusion.

Thanks Grim Squeaker, vlc works great and was easy to install. I have been trying for a couple of weeks but i had missed that post. Thanks again.

While i have your attention, is there any way i can use VLC to play YouTube flash video? I watch a lot of British TV on youtube but my A1 Linpus cant play full screen youtube. The video freezes and stutters only on youtube and only on full screen. I havent been able to find a fix but somebody has said to use VLC, But how?

    Cheers
