VLC can play flash video files (.flv), but you need to have them stored locally. Try one of these firefox addons to download and save flash content.

    Hi guys,
im new here. Just bought myself the 8gig acer aspire one with linpus. I have a question, im not really good with linux. I just did the steps indicated to get the vlc player but i got this results in the terminal

    [user@localhost Documents]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    Retrieving http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
warning: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.iMRYc7: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a109b1ec
    Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
    package livna-release-8-1 is already installed
    [root@localhost ~]# yum install vlc
    Setting up Install Process
    Parsing package install arguments
    No package vlc available.
    Nothing to do
    [root@localhost ~]#

this is the second result i got after running the commands again. The first one was the same " No package vlc available" but i was able to download the packages.

    did i do anything wrong?

Yes - you did not bother to read the rest of the topic or even the previous page ;)
However, while you can find revised instructions there, the guide by macles is even more up to date:

    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/11/inst ... linux.html

Then again, vlc 0.9 seems to have some bugs. So perhaps you do wish to use the other way :p

Sure, the info about livna/rpmfusion is in the thread, but it's getting longer and longer (making it less likely to be read) because people are asking the same questions, including several where that is the answer. Maybe the OP or a mod could edit the first post?

I have installed vlc. However, the problem is I still have the pre installed media player so vlc doesn't open.
I guess there must be an executable file to kick off vlc but I can't find it. There would be such a file in msdos or windows, which I'm much more familiar with.
So can someone tell me where the "executable" file for vlc is in the file system?
    Thanks
    David
PS - All I want to achieve is to play .MOV i.e. quicktime movies, which the pre installed media player won't play, which reports that it doesn't have the relevant codec.

Not on mine right now so I couldn't tell you offhand (though using search might do it). If you just want to launch it though, hitting alt+F2 should bring up the run box, and entering "vlc" ought to launch it.

Thank you Jack, that did the trick.
I can now play .MOV Quicktime movies.

I just tried to install the vlc like described with the terminal. it worked fine though at least to install...but i can not open it..i tried the desktop hack but there is no symbol in the multimedia section. so i started pirut and uninstalled the package and used the packet managerr to install it again...and again the install was successfull..but again no symbol in multimedia section...i also tried typing in "vlc" with the "xfrun4" but the answer is "no such file or directory"...im really very desperate right now...please help :(

    *UPDATE*
i tried the first method again and now that:

    [root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    Retrieving http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
warning: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.3rFQyC: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a109b1ec

    [root@localhost ~]# yum install vlc
    Setting up Install Process
    Parsing package install arguments
    No package vlc available.
    Nothing to do

This is because livna is defunct, with rpm-fusion now where you want yum to look. Though the original post needs to be updated (please, OP or mods?), the instructions have been given several times in this thread, but you may need to look back a little because the same questions (frankly and specifically, this one) keep getting asked over and over.

-Does anyone have trouble with vlc pausing/hiccuping for a few seconds every five or ten minutes, and then bypassing what it should have been playing, to catch up? The playback pause isn't as annoying as the skipping over a few seconds' worth of content. Caching, maybe?

-Is there a way to see all of the [time/time remaining] information, at the bottom left of the window? It looks like an immovable divider hides the minutes and seconds left of the time remaining: http://i41.tinypic.com/xo1ch4.png

One thing i find with this forum already is the arrogance of people with there replys to linux newbies. We al have to start somewhere and all these new term i have never heard of are very confusing all this livna and rpm means nothing to me and all i did was folow intructions step by step from the first page and then when it didnt work i read through most of the posts and coulnt make head nor tale of it. Linux is hard enough for newbies as it is and dont need to be knocked at trying to get my head round this os. Your totally right if there is a new way of installing vlc then the first page should definateley be updated for newbies like myself. So come on mods pls put us out of our agony.
Especialy with th new acer guys that will be bombarding these forums as the price of these notebooks keeps going down £150 asda deal springs to mind

Arghhh!! I had problems with the codec's with vlc I downloaded via package manager so I removed it via package manager and rebooted. It's no longer searchable on my machine. I then tried to install via yum and terminal but it says it's already there. Help please! How do I get a current vlc version with codec's please so I can play divx and avi files?

In this particular case it is more... annoyance. The sole reason this topic is as large as it is is because the same question gets asked over and over and over and over and over and over again.

However - I agree that the mods are primarily to blame here.

Agreed. Though I myself don't see (without reading into it) anything I would assume is meant to be hostile or arrogant, I apologize if what I said was anything but matter-of-fact.

Yeah, are there any active mods at all?

I wasn't gonna say anything that's not constructively on topic, but I guess one more useless post here won't make a difference. :p
