Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

I completed my latest test run of installing an Intrepid Minimal iso and building up from there. This time I just happened to try using ReiserFS. As you know your config doesn't support Reiser so I enabled it and compiled, also minus all the stuff in the Kernel Hacking section. Anyway, when I installed it I was able to compile madwifi no prob. Might be cause I have the kernel source tree on my system and not just the .deb headers. Anyway, thanks for the setup! I've definitely determined yours is the fastest to boot and most responsive after loadup I've found and I've tried quite a few. Even the Aspire kernel in Arch Linux. Now I just have to find a nice fast netbook-launcher friendly desktop environment.

Ooh, I was just about to ask about 3G usb modem support. Can you send/post your kernel?

I'll second that request. 3g support will make this little machine perfect.

I installed this kernel and nearly everything seems to work perfect. But the right SD card, which works with the kernel I upgraded from, isn't recognized now, even if the card is present when booting. Is there a solution for this?

BIG THANX to all involved in this kernel config research and compiling work...
I can confirm that this kernel seems to be working very nice on Linux Mint 6 (Ubuntu 8.10 based). Very nice and quick boot. Wireless worked like a charm (after the usual Ubuntu tweaks). I am very impressed and will follow this work closely!

    Going off topic a bit.

How well did Mint 6 work for you out of the box on the AA1? I downloaded it and am thinking about installing it. Curious how much of the normal AA1 Ubuntu 8.10 tweaks needed to be done. What kind of boot time you getting with Mint and the new kernel from here?

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

It was the same as for Ubuntu 8.10 (following the same guide as when I tested Ubuntu 8.10, i.e. nor better nor worse than 8.10...). For me Mint is perfect as it has all the codecs etc. pre-installed...but I guess it is a matter of taste. However, I suggest that we start a new thread about this if you have more questions/comments on Mint 6....so, let's give this thread back to kernel-hacking... ;-)

    fozzya,

Thank you very much for the prompt respond. What i am trying to find out was to uninstall the rc7 and then install the rc8. You have kindly given the install instruction for rc8, thanks again for the great help. Does that means i do not have to uninstall the rc7 to install the rc8?

Many thanks, the people that provides help to newbie like me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

    thanks.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Thank you very much for releasing this kernel. Finally my damn sound problems are ALL gone.

    1. But, my int mic isn't working. The ext. works fine in skype. Is there a software which allows me to configure the mic or can record my voice?

    2. Do I need to install the header too? I had to skip this, cause of the missing libc6 dependency problem, even though the newest libc6 is installed.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Yes,you don't. You can have 2 or 5 or n+1 kernels on your system. You can chose one to boot from grub boot menu on startup by pressing Esc key when the boot loader starts. To install/uninstall something on your aa1 you can use GUI tool named Synaptic Package Manager.

You're welcome. Merry Xmas & HPNY!

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Excellent work SICKBOY, I've installed your latest kernel and everything works as it should so far. Many thanks! Now the only thing bugging me is the 30+ seconds boot up time.

One small feature request - could you enable CONFIG_ACER_WMI for your next build? It looks like it will be useful for the Aspire One users.

Another thing worth checking out is the CPU architecture set in the config. Reading this discussion at LKML, it looks like CONFIG_X86_GENERIC (which as I understand is equivalent to -mtune=generic gcc flag) is preferable for Intel Atom.

    Thanks and happy holidays!

I don't know whether it's possible to use a repository for the kernels, that way everybody gets the update easily. It makes it also easier to write an istallation howto.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Hm, maybe we (the eternal "we" that - please god - isn't actually me ;-) ) can create a launchpad ppa for aspireone specific packages; can contain this kernel as its star attraction then, but also other stuff like acerfand and whatever else people have cobbled together, upgraded to the status of proper packages...

PS: Am using the sickboy kernel; very nice, have been thinking it belongs in a ppa for a while, this question just pushed me to actually say it. :) Would need to sort out package version numbering properly of course...

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

This option do nothing on AA1. I've already compiled the kernel with "CONFIG_ACER_WMI=m" and there's no difference.

    What - don't you have /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/ directory?
