Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

EDIT: After reading posts on page 10, I see that there is a problem with the kernel which means there is no makefile_32.cpu.

In that case, what is the point in having kernel headers?

Is there any way to get sources (in my case, madwifi, compiling?)

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

I can't speak for Casao, but I also have a Broadcom card in my AAO. (Result of an RMA) It works fine with the stock 8.10 install - the Hardware Driver manager pops up and announces it has a proprietary driver available for my hardware, then downloads and installs the driver. With the Stickboy kernel, or any custom-compiled kernel I've tried myself, no wifi and the Hardware Driver applet reports no proprietary drivers available.

Broadcom is historically fairly linux-unfriendly, but the recently started providing a proprietary driver so that's a step in the right direction. There's 2 different open-source drivers that the Linux community reverse-engineered, plus there's the ndiswrapper option. I plan on trying to get it working in the next few days one way or another. I'll start a new thread rather than cluttering up this one.

I believe rfmon does not work in ath5k?

    This is useful in kismet/aircrack

Apparently the wifi leds can be made to work (with some settings in sysctl) with madwifi. Apparently this is not the case with ath5k. Although ath5k is working fine for me currently, I would give madwifi a try if it were part of an upcoming SICKBOY kernel. Not huge deal for me though. Thanks SICKBOY for providing the kernel and making the updates you have, including bluetooth.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Actually, I believe it was a single question - broadcom works perfectly fine in stock intrepid kernel, which is what I'm using at the moment. Everything for the broadcom drivers on Google seems to be referring to NDISwrapper things.

I've run an lsmod and I believe that it is currently using the WL module for wifi. I cannot find any module in /lib/modules named WL. Quick look confirms b43 is a Broadcom driver, however, copying the .ko to the drivers/net/wireless/b43 folder for this kernel does not bring working wifi, nor does attempting to modprobe b43, as it says it cannot find a module with that name. If this is the incorrect file to be moving or attempting, I can try another if anyone can point it out.

I attempted to use apt-get to install the broadcom drivers, but this did not work either. I believe this was an ndiswrapper setup as it downloaded firmware.

What is it about this kernel that causes the Hardware Drivers to no longer find and setup these drivers? That's a fairly big problem, as the reason to use ubuntu is its ease of use and a (relatively) good UI principle.

Sickboy, if it's not too much trouble, do you think you could include the broadcom in the next version of this kernel? It's a relatively common mod, and apparently they have begun to come back from Acer with broadcom chips in some machines.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

Will this fix the makefile_32.cpu problem?

As far as I understand, the kernel boots faster and the aspire one's hardware works better with it.

Unfortunately I have no idea. What is the problem?

There are no new features in the 2.6.28 release kernel, just a bunch of bug fixes on top of RC8 and RC9.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

I would like to use one of these kernels, as they seem extremelly fast to boot and I hope ath5k support will be more stable by now. I need to use my 3G USB modem, which is a Novatel MC950D. Under 2.6.27 it is supported by usbserial module, and I can use network manager applet to control it.

Will any of these kernels support this way of operation, or could somebody please provide me with a link or something to make my own kernel supporting this?

Thanks in advance, and keep the good work making our little machines even better every day.

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

I replaced the wireless card with a Dell 1390 thinking that I'd install OS X at some point. I just installed the latest 2.6.28 rc8 kernel, and now my wireless isn't working. To get it to work earlier, I went to the "Hardware Drivers" and installed the proprietary driver that showed up. However, when I look there now, I don't see any options =(

How can I add the necessary driver?

    Hello all,
Thank you for compiling kernels for acer acpire one!
One question - why don't you compile them in LPIA mode (sorry, I don't know is it really better or not)? And how long battery lives with your kernels?

Re: UPDATED-2.6.28-rc8 Kernel Image and Headers. 100% Working

In Sickboy r8 and your kernel, there is no makefile_32.cpu in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28aa1/arch/x86

This stops me compiling anything, which makes headers useless as far as I know until the problem is fixed.

I'm pretty sure i'm not the only one experiencing this problem as it has been mentioned previously in the thread and Sickboy replied with [

I am now running the figvam kernel so I will report back with any more errors

    Thanks,
