Hey I'm brand new to Linus (from windows) and I need some help getting started with a few things.

    1. when I download programs I cant get them to install (in windows all you do it slick on the program and it starts to install). How do you install programs?
    2. Do I need a virus scanner and firewall?

    3. How do I defragment my harddrive (120gb) and do I need to?

I know this must have been covered on the forums but I'd still love it if you could take me through it step by step

    Thanks

    Stu

    1. typically you install from the distro's repositories. You can use yum on the commandline or run pirut. If you've activated the right-click menu as outlined elsewhere around these forums, you can right-click on the desktop, click System, then click "Add/Remove Software".

    2. no to both

    3. not required with Linux

    Cheers.

In Linux all you do is select the software you want from the list, and the package manager handles all the downloading and installing work.
