    Hi guys,

I got my Aspire One the other day. Spent a while trying to use Linpus and fell flat on my face. I thought I'd be able to put XP straight onto it the Aspire One using the disc. It gets so far and then says "cannot locate asms files" or something.

I have no idea what has happened, but now I'm left with a computer and no operating system.

I tried using the Linux disc I got with the computer, but I can't even get it to go back to its original settings.

Please help! I'm terrified I've broken it all.

I'm a total amateur by the way, so I don't get most of the stuff on these forums.

P.S. If it is possible to find a solution that results in me being able to use Windows rather than Linux, that would be preferable.
Bottom line though, I just want it to work again :(

    Thanks guys

Well, I don't know what config you were using when (re)installing, but,

The most direct way for an install would be to plug a USB external dvd drive into the AOne directly, and boot the dvd directly off that (have to push the F12 key during startup, I think).

That should work, theoretically, if it doesn't, you may want to call Acer (maybe the install dvd got scratched, for instance). I wouldn't worry too much, btw, this doesn't sound like a hardware failure so it should be possible to get it back up on Linux at least.

If you are installing from an external cdrom your need to point the installer to look at it, it should be d:\I386

I'm installing from an SD card in a USB drive with a copy of my XP CD (obviously my Aspire doesn't have a CD drive so I have to do it this way). When I get the "asms missing" error the "copy files from:" box is pre-populated with a funny string like this:

    Code:
    GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\HARDDISK1\PARTITION1\$WIN_NT$.~\I386\

Any idea what that's all about? I've tried using "D:\I386" (and lots of different versions like that), but nothing works...
