I just finished installing Fedora 10 XFCE and letting it install all the updates. I can't find any way to set up power management. The Installed Applications list shows gnome-power-manager installed but I don't see it nor know how to get it running if it's not. Can anyone help me out? I'm new to the Linux world...
Also, is gnome-power-manager the best choice, considering I'm running XFCE?
    Thanks!
    Steve

    from the command line type

    Code:
    su -c 'gnome-power-manager'

and enter your root password when prompted, then set up your preferences and remember to click the 'Make Default' button. then initiate a restart and remember to tick the 'Save Session' box. gnome power manager should now start at every boot :)

you can also access it through the screensaver settings dialogue but for some reason i needed to do it from the command line to get the settings to stick, after i did that and got the settings to stick i then changed the settings after i accessed it from the screensaver settings dialogue and they stuck so i think it's only needed to access it from the command line for the first time

yes i think g-p-m is the best option for xfce, but other peeps may like other options. you might also like to have a look at my post here that sets some other powersaving options weather your using the psu or not >> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11944

This is not working for me... I have no clue how to fix it.

    Code:
    [root@toshka etc]# gnome-power-manager

(gnome-power-manager:3664): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

     - This program cannot start until you start the dbus session service.

This is usually started automatically in X or gnome startup when you start a new session.

and dbus isn't running? i think your install is seriously kaput as dbus is an integral part of fedora and should start automatically with the x session, or are you trying to run g-p-m in runlevel 3?

    Phil,

I'm trying to run it at run level 5.
Install... hmm... it's all the same after numerous reinstalls from different media.

How do I check whether it's actually running?

in xfce in the main menu go down to 'System' then choose 'Xfce4 Taskmanager' in the taskmanager you should see a couple of 'dbus-deamon' and a couple of 'dbus-launch' one of each run as your username and dbus launch run by gdm and dbus-daemon run by root, if not then i don't know what's happened.

also what install media did you use? did you follow any install guides? have you tried modifying your install in anyway?
