I have an Aspire One running XP and a HP Photosmart C5180 (network)printer. I have installed/reinstalled the software many times with it saying everything was successful, but when I look in the printers/faxes there is nothing there. The software will also not uninstall. Printer works fine on my desktop and shared printers work fine on Aspire One.

i have the same printer. Using it with XP SP3 on my AAO. It is installed on my Windows Server 2008 and the drivers are stored there.
No problems with them though.. are you connecting it locally or networked?
    Static or dynamic IP?

it is plugged into the network with a static ip, setup sees the printer, installation completes just fine, but no printer is added to the list

    strange..
as a test, can you create a new user account, give it admin rights and try to install it using that user?
just trying to understand if the user profile could be corrupt?

have you checked if there is a more updated version of the drivers on the HP website?
If I had to make a wild guess I would say it sounds like you're installing drivers for a different OS other than the one you have but I guess you've already checked that..

last thing that comes to my mind is to try with the Generic drivers HP has. They should work for every one of their printers, although you may not be able to use scanner and/or other functionalities of the specific printer..
    ..
if you have a chance of truing the same driver file from another computer, give it a shot.. could be a corrupt file?
