I'm on Windows XP with the A150 3cell. I have a problem from time to time where I will close the laptop lid to go into hibernation, but nothing will turn off and the screen will just stay frozen at the "preparing to hibernate" screen.

This seems to happen randomly and with no pattern. Any ideas/suggestions?

I've done quite a few defrags.

    But I don't know what hiberfil.sys

What's its purpose and why should I delete it? Where is it located?

(Remember, this problem happens only rarely.)

hiberfil.sys is on the root of your C:\ and it is the hibernation file that windows uses to store the info when you go into hibernate.

Oh I thought you were saying that I *should* delete it.

I don't know what to do then...

You should delete it. Windows will recreate it again after, no worries about that.

Make sure hibernation is enabled in your power settings. Press function f3 (blue function key and f3 at the same time) this will bring up the power options, if you don't see it minimize any open browsers, or other screens, it will be on the desktop screen. Choose the "advanced tab" make sure the option of hibernate is selected and the checkbox enabled for "when I close the lid of my portable computer" now click on the "hibernate" tab and make sure hibernate is enabled here as well.

If your keyboard layout is different you can get to the same panel thru the control panel window - select the "power options" icon.

It works a charm on mine.

I checked, and just as I thought, hibernation is obviously enabled. I say obviously because I did mention that my computer DOES hibernate. It only rarely gives me this problem.

Can anyone confirm if I should delete that hiberfil.sys file?

Is there anything else I should do?

othing we can do, especially as this is the wrong section, and you dont give any details.
why not experiment, maybe certain programs make it not hibernate.
if you say it doesnt go into hibernate sometimes what can i do, well how do we know, you might have all sorts of cracks installed or whatever...
    why not just use sleep?

my One was doing this the other day. I shut off hibernation, restarted the computer, and turned hibernation back on. It has worked correctly since then.

What that did, was let Windows delete the hiberfil.sys, and then recreate it again when you enabled it. Glad to see it worked for you.
