problem in seeing external disks

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP, and when I try to connect external storage units (Lacie external disks, for instance) through the USB port, the presence of a new hardware is notified but the external unit does not appear in the file browser and it cannot be accessed in any way. When I connect USB key storage (2GB max), instead, they can be seen.. Do you please have a hint, a suggestion for this frustrating problem? Many thanks in advance!
