    i'm surely dumb
i currently have a Xubuntu distribution on my AAO.
I have created a bootable USB key, and copy a vlited version of vista on. (i have tried with the real DVD too)
When i boot on the USB key, i have a DOS command invit, but i can't run setup.exe in DOS mode (normal, it's not a DOS program)

How can i have a real boot USB key, not a DOS command invit (like a CD-ROM boot)?

i spend 2 days on the install and i'm very tired now,
i hope someone will help me :)

    Hi,

I installed Vista last night on to my Aspire One 512Mb/120Gb. Currently running it using a USB readyboost awaiting my ram upgrade (please please tomorrow ;) ). Anyway, I followed the instructions here:

    http://jblarg.blogspot.com/2008/08/installing-windows-vista-or-windows.html

As an addendum though, I could not use his method of making the USB partition active as my dvd enabled laptop would not see the usbkey in diskpart. I used UBCD with Free FDisk (I think) to mark the partition active. All then worked fine. TBH, whilst a little laggy, Vista is perfectly useable with only 512MB + ReadyBoost. I'd recommend it to people swayed by the idea of Vista, but not wanting to take their laptop to pieces.

No Problem. I've been a Linux bigot for as long as I can remember, and have tried to stay away from Vista, for probably all the wrong reasons. However, having tried it, it does make for a really good OS. I generally have 7 or 8 computers on the go at any one time, and I'll probably dual-boot the Aspire One with Linux Mint (my distro of choice for ease of use). That said, can't wait for my 1gb of ram to turn up to make Vista really fly on this little purdy machine ;)

Glad you got it all worked out. As an aside, UBCD and UBCD4WIN have saved my bacon on numerous occasions and are a definite must-have on all geeks list :).

...and just has a quick update, the 1gb ram upgrade went very smoothly. Now my little machine flies like never before. Pachanka, how did the install go? Remember to put on the Intel Driver to enable Aero, and install the XP card reader drivers, otherwise only the left hand SD slot works :s

Can you plz. give me a link where i can find the intel driver so that I can enable Aero.
I have the following version of the Intel Graphics driver for vista now: 15.8.3.1504
I have not been able to enable Aero yet. Is there a newer driver?

    Regards
    Tomas

I have the same driver as you and Aero as the color theme option. But it will not work. When I use the Alt-tab command it look like XP, not the 3d windows.

just an FYI. I installed vista ultimate and just let windows update install the video drivers, and aero works fine on mine

(ps, the 3d flip is accessed via WinKey-Tab, Alt-Tab is still basic app switching, even with aero).

As tankster says, the 3D application switch is win+tab. You should know wether Aero is enabled or not if the minimize and maximize buttons glow when the mouse hovers over them, and the Start bar is transparent when windows are not maximized.

    no pb to install vista
but finally rollback to a XP version
i have tried a lot of OS lol

it seems that the SSD works better with vista, less freeze than XP, but i need RAM, and more disk space, so.....
****, same pb, with the XP install
don't understand why that doesn't work

i have the night to find a solution ^^

You are so right win+tab is it and it works fine and my mini- maximazed buttons do glow so aero works fine.

    Pachanka,

You're having the same issue with installing XP? Does it install ok, but will not reboot? If this is the case it is probably still seeing the vista bootloader, and XP hasn't overwritten it. You can boot to an XP recovery console and issue a FDISK /mbr or a FIXMBR command, which will reinstall the XP Master Boot Record.

    maybe u're right (again) ^^

EDIT : i'm currently copy XP install on the key
fdisk /mbr must be used with the key boot or under vista console ?
i used it on the key

    EDIT2 : nope, can't install.............
