Okay tried it your way and as I say am getting the image appearing 100% okay that is until I turn the pc of and then back on again where it then reverts back to the blue screen version, having read a few other threads elsewhere on his forum it woud appear that I am not alone in this and that the advice given was that the wanted background had to be put in the backdrops folder. have since placed it within this required folder but I see from the contents off this folder that the blue screen background is marked as " default " and this is no doubt what is causing the screen to revert back every time !!

so next question obviously is - how do I switch the default backdrop from the blue acer version to my new version ??

This morning I switched off the AA1, while being in the XFCE desktop. When I switched on the AA1 I had the same as you a blue screen.
However, I then switched to ACER desktop and back to XFCE desktop and my picture was back. There seems to be something wrong in the script. I assume that somebody from the XFCE team is reading this thread and could reply for a solution.
To copy the file into backdrops can not be the right answer, since the logic of the meny desktop setting allows what I am doing.

The same problem is, when I put executable icons on the panel under the ACER desktop they disappear when I switch to the XFCE desktop, while the panel settings should be independent from the desktop settings. Question is, how these settings are saved.
There seems to be a problem.

    Hey guys,

the problem is well known and talked a lot here...you'd propably found it via the search function...

    anyways...

XFCE does not load your private folders on startup... nothing to do here....the solution to youzr problem is as simple as this: Place the desired background image in
    Code:
    /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/
Now how do we do that...

    approach 1 (for non-command-line-haters):
    open a terminal and run
    Code:
    sudo cp <locationon of the picture> /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/
In my case (I have storage expansion) the <locationon of the picture> is /mnt/home/Pictures/mypicture.png. (In anyx other case it should be /home/user/Pictures/mypicture.png)

    This approach works always....

    approach 2 (for command-line dislikers):
get the run command via ALT+F2
    type sudo thunar
browse to the location of you picture, i.e. /mnt/home/Pictures/
    Copy mypicture.png
    browse to /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/
    Paste mypicture.png
    close thunar

This approach should work always...i did not enter a thing...everything just mac-/win-like clicking...

    Now changing the background...

    Open right-click-menu:
    >settings>background
    tick show image
select file, it should now be /usr/share/xfce4/backdrops/mypicture.png (browse if you are not sure)
    close the window...

now your done...the image stays after reboot...

If you follow these instructions, it should work...

    greetings

    bill

    ...

Well the developers should look into this problem; it is not obvious and not logical for the choice you have in the desktop setting window.
Anyway good to know. I tried to find a solution in this forum but you are the first to state it here very clearly.

Bingo it works so our problem is solved in a practical way. Took only 5 days after searching through several fora. But you gave us the proper advice. thanks again, Bill.

Just a remark concerning line command versus drag and drop. It is not a question of like or dislike but of in which method do you as beginner or non IT person do more mistakes and where do you need more IT knowledge. Drag and drop is like driving a car: You don't need to know how the car works when you drive. So it is for the typical AA1 user.
I like Linux and this system on an AA1 very much: much faster, much better use of resources. But entering into the linux world is really hard work. Thanks to people like you who obviously have a feeling for us poor beginners it gets easier now.
    Thanks a lot Winfried

Okay another quick question now that we have that sorted - thanks again !!

okay now have my wanted image showing as my backdrop, when I am in this desktop preferences menu I untick the " allow Xfce to manage the desktop " I getthe wanted image as a whole screen ie. similar to windows style and without the acer menus, also I get the bottom tool bar and the internet browser bar at the top right hand side off the screen , all this would be great if a/ it would stay like this and b/ if I were to get more options on this screen such as you would get on the acer menu, any ideas how I go about configuring this ?? tried right clicking on the page thinking I would get a drop down menu where I could navigate from. but nothing comes up ???

Okay i can understand that...and i appologise putting it that way...
sometimes , esp. using linux it's harder the drag'n'drop way... just have a look at it, it's not that scary ;)

What you want is a "real" desktop... and what you should do is read the following thread:
    viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1525
    or/and
    viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4310

As i am still using the "default" (but way customised) desktop of linpus i havn't dealt with this problem...
