Well tomorrow I will get my Toshiba 80Gb 1.8" zif disk, but I don't think it will come with a flip cable, have to order it on ebay I guess.. damn that will take me another week or 2 before I can play.. :( any Dutch guys with a flip cable :)

    Re: Project 1.8Zif HDD

Sorry for the noob question, but whats a flip cable? I'm ordering a zif drive from ebay, and I thought I would need a cable too, as the onboard SSD has the cable already attached, but this comes with no cable...
So I'm guessing this is what the flip cable is literally the cable connecting the drive to the motherboard?

OK, if you are looking for the cables on ebay, theres none to be seen by themselves, but if you buy one of these
    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__cf-zif_W ... =&_fcsfc=0
it leaves you the option to use a cf instead of a zif drive at a later date, plus you get 2 ribbon cables in osme of them.
I've filtered to UK only because I hate waiting 4 weeks for shipping thats meant to take 5 days from HK.

If you are indeed not looking for simple old cables, then please disregard this. I did search google for both zif cable and zif flip cable, the former coming up with a few results, mainly expensive and generally not in stock, and the latter coming up with no items, and nothing that cuold explain to me what a zif flip cable is.
    Hope this helps

    Bro Jefri,
I am from Surabaya, Indonesia. Congratulation for the successful mod.
Could you inform us the battery performace after you changed the SSD into 1.8 zif HDD?
In addition, where did you buy the zif cable in Jakarta?

    Re: Project 1.8Zif HDD

My 80GB ZIF should come tuesday. I think I might try all 3 alternative OS'es and test them all for speed and drivers etc.
Ive already upgraded to 1.5GB RAM, and this is the max supported. This is because the max per slot on the motherboard is 1GB and theres only one slot, with 512MB soldered to the board in place of the second slot (Well basically anyway)

    Thanks for the benchmarks.

So with the HDD you actually lose 30% of the read speed: 20MB/s vs. 30MB/s for the SSD, but gain double the write speed, 20MB/s vs 10MB/s. Plus the HDD is a lot better reading and writing smaller blocks of data.

That would suggest you could do better still with the CF-ZIF adapter and a 266x or 300x CF card, which I think get 35 MB/s read and over 20MB/s writes.

Or wait for the XP version with the 120GB 2.5" SATA HDD, which will faster and have more capacity.

hehe, this mod not recommended for those who want to buy and mod..
this mod just for those who actually bought aspire one and dissapointed with it ssd..
because, with the aspire one + mod cost u can buy other netbook which have better performance
but its all back to you,if u like to mod..go ahead,i'm supporting

Yeah, bcause the only thing that annoying me was the stalling..
And like i wrote at my first post at this thread, just what a coincidence for me to have an eksternal hardisk which 1.8zif hdd inside :p
For me,to use the CF->1.8zif is expensive cost over US$100 for 16GB 300x..
    So what i got here,no more stalling+bigger storage-read speed..
Money does talk  how much u spend how much u get

My original ZIF wouldn't fir in the slot, so I had to take of the blue plastic on the end that was attached to the SSD. Was going fine till the last ew millimetres, at which point it pulled the white plastic off too. So got to wait till tomorrow now.
Be careful if you have to remove the blue plastic!!
