    yes, i tried both FAT32 & ntfs. the pny im using currently (until i figure out the sandisk issue) is ntfs. the reason everyone says to format fat32 is to reduce writes to disk (which aren't a problem for those of us using high speed media.) i did, however try both. also, i read previous in this thread others are having the problem with sandisk cards in particular- no one has posted about fixes tho. A LITTLE HELP HERE PLEASE!

    if the red led on the CF adapter is on, does that mean it should work? i get 'None' in the BIOS and have always given up at that point. I have never tried to see if it would actually show up in the installer or anything.

    fsilva: check earlier in this thread. it will show you exactly what the flipped cable is. you just need to make sure the leads (exposed metal on the ribbon) is facing DOWN on both connections. then, as long as the connections are tight, you should be good to go. make sure they're in all the way, too. you may not need them, depending on the adapter you purchased.

    overthis: i traded the rest of my pack of flipped cables to a friend for the pny 266x 4g card im currently using for my temporary install until i can get the sandisk working properly. he uses them for iPod/mp3 player modding. next time i see him i'll ask about getting one of them back. sorry i didn't reply!

    My adapter is the same of the most of all in this thread. When i bought it, it cames with 2 cables: uno thin and one normal, but both are with connectors directec to same direction, so i think i need a flip cable that have one conection up, one directed down. Im tired of dont use my One, f*cking SSD pushed me to this mod... I must know if the problem is really the cable, if is, i buy the flip one .

    I totally misplaced the ZIF cables that came with my adapter. Since you have yours, maybe you should try to make the flip cable on your own. I think you might just need to scrape the white insulation off the other side of the ZIF cable. I'd probably trim off the existing end first and reattach it to the other side of side you'd scrape.

    I don't have an extra one yet, and since I still need the original ZIF cable for my SSD, I haven't tried the mod I suggested. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work though.

    Hi I've been reading around looking for info on replacing my 8Gb SSD with a CF card and Zif to CF adapter.

    Everyone seems to be using a minimum of 233x speed cards to run XP as XP is useless on the SSD (I've got the slowest version). I want to stick with my much modded Linpus, but would like more storage space and would like to know if a 32Gb 133x speed CF card would be comparable to the SSD when running Linux.

    Cheers

    Hi dude. The SSD reads at least 20mb/s, and writes 5mb/s. You just have to know whats the speed of that card that you want... 133x seems poor, but its your call! I need windows, designer things linux is unaceptable... Cheers

    if you want more storage spage, why don't you simply get a fast class 6 sdhc card and call it a day? keep your ssd if it's fast enough for your application (and modded to your needs). the sdhc can even stay in the expansion slot w/o sticking out- that's what it's there for: to expand storage. to buy the adapter, buy a card, literally CUT the inside of your shiny new laptop apart to do the same thing you could do without voiding warranty or possibly screwing up that new toy? come on..

    btw:
    1x = 150kb/second = 0.15 Megabytes/second
    133x = 19.95MB/s (slower read time than oem ssd)
    266x = 39.9MB/s
    300x = 45 MB/s
    350x = 52.5MB/s (theoretical- there is one that claims it, but comes not even close on proving it TMK)

    Easy tiger, I'm already using a 16gb card for storage expansion and may replace it with a 32gb, an additional 32gb would give me enough storage to not need to carry external hard disks. I've already added 1gb ram an internal usb hub with bluetooth, disabled the swap file and reclaimed the partition as well as following the space reclaiming tips on macles.blogspot.com and even though I try to force software to save to the sd card a lot still ends up on the ssd which I have to regularly clear out.

    Transfer rates on spec sheets don't always give the full picture and I was just hoping someone could give me real world feedback on the performance of slower cards with Linpus.

    Thanks

    mark: i wasn't meaning to come off as arguementative (or bitchy) , im sorry :) i was exceptionally tired last evening after a really crappy day. i don't know of anyone (there may be some, but i haven't seen anyone) keeping linpus after ssd-cf swap. i think i checked every post containing CF, compact flash, and ssd mod in them and don't recall seeing any.

    and seeing as you seem to know your way around a computer.. you could also try disecting a small thumb drive (of capacity would work best for you) and squeeze it into the One, using your internal usb. just a thought :idea:

    Mark, have you thought of using the right SD reader with a SDHC card for extra storage or a physically small USB like the Imation Atom it is about twice the size of the actual plug of a regular USB stick or about 1 cm wide and 2 cm long so it would not stick out very far at all and it is close to the fastest USB sticks out there.

    Goremek - No problem thanks for helping, hope you've had a better day.

    I suppose it is running against what most people are doing but I didn't want a hard drive AA1 and have enjoyed tinkering. I picked up a cheap (£10) 8Gb usb drive from Tesco which should fit but haven't got round to trying it yet.

    Only thing I could find was that the standard SSD has a read/write speed of 25/5 and the Transcend 133x is 20/5, but they are available for around £50. I've been looking on Ebay and there is a Pretec 233x card for £75 with speeds of 45/25, not sure if I believe that though.

    donec - I did solder an old microsd card into a cut down microsd to sd converter, this fitted into the right hand sd slot without sticking out but it wasn't very elegant and I'd be nervous about doing it to an 8 or 16Gb card. I also want to keep this slot free to back up images from my DSLR, this is the main reason I want as much free storage as possible, as well as music, ebooks, videos and maps.

    I'll probably get a 32Gb SD card first and swap out the 16Gb card to use in my camera.

    Cheers for all the suggestions

    Mark
