Puppy has the petget manager. You will get a list of official packages available for install. Just click on whatever you want and it will be downloaded and installed.

For custom .pet packages, just download the package and save it. Click on the .pet and this will invoke the installer just like in windows. Sit back and the software will be installed with no further input from you. With custom packages the petget installer will come back with a dialog saying there are unmet dependancies - ignore this. Everything is included in the .pet but the petget installer does not know this with custom pet packages. You will need to reboot or exit x for menu entries to show up in many cases.

Uninstalling packages is easily done with the petget manager.

I cannot really comment on battery life. I only use my AA1 when travelling and that was a bit ago so I'm unsure. I don't think it was much good for more than a couple of hours of working hard on wireless.

The most recent .pet packages are found in the puppy forum with direct links and links to other sources.

That's what I am looking at, but the "Installed Packages" window is empty.

Edit: if I install a package it shows up in the Installed Packages window. I'm looking for a way to uninstall about 30 or 40 packages, things I will never ever use, which are already installed in Puppy.

Bob D: I see what you mean. There is pet-be-gone but it has limitations. Have not tried it myself. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17035 Someone usally produces a stripped down pup so people can add what they want but nothing is available yet for 4.1.1. It will take a bit for the derivatives to catch up. NOP is the newest designed for OpenOffice and Opera browser but would require some tweaking to get working like craig's remaster.

Warshy: You can setup a swap partition(page file in windows terms) on your Puppy flash with gparted. This should ensure your windows ssd should remain untouched.

    Thanks hayagix,
I think I'll try wolfpup in the meantime. I've got a working Linpus and Puppy to go back to so no harm in trying. I just want something stripped-down and simple and tweakable, but not requiring advanced Linux programming skills (which I haven't got and don't want to have to learn!) to make it work.

I think he's still got a few niggles with it but said he's "on the case" and is sorting it out. It's a bit confusing as he's using two threads.
Can someone post here if they find wireless and card recognition working OOB please?
