    According to laptopmag:
    http://blog.laptopmag.com/acer-aspire-one-an-in-depth-look

That feature which adds an SD card memory to the hdd is pretty cool, but RAM and the disk soldered is really terrible for me, I was thinking in adding more RAM and a bigger SSD... :(

im not 100% sure on this tbh, i know there is soldered ram either 512mb or 1gb depending on model, but i think there is spare sodimm slot as well...time will tell for sure.

I hope so, it's almost out :D but even if there's a free slot for RAM, it's pretty hard or impossible to get a bigger SSD :(

I was really disappointed to read this as well, but if there is a spare SO-DIMM slot it won't be so bad.

I don't want a hard disk (they're too fragile, noisy and power-hungry) but I do want 1GB. I had intended to buy the 512MB 8GB Linux version and was going to add another 512MB or replace the existing RAM with a new 1GB DIMM.

I'm not expecting to run VMWare or anything demanding loads of memory but I tend to think (perhaps wrongly) that 1GB is the bare minimum these days to run any reasonably modern OS and I am intending to install Ubuntu on mine (probably the netbook remix).

I'm not bothered about the SSD though. We shall have two slots for extra cards and I already have a 16GB SDHC card which will be plenty.

It seems the One will come indeed with a free slot for RAM, but the soldered SSD leaves me no option but to get the 80GB HDD version :(

You don't need 1 GB of RAM if you are using the Linux version...

...and you won't need 80GB if you are using Linux either.

I have two laptops, one running Mac OS X which has all my stuff on it. This has filled a 250GB disk. My other runs Ubuntu and has the OS and a few media files, bits and pieces etc and it only runs to about 9GB in total. 8GB SSD plus an SDHC card (mine is 16GB) should be entirely adequate for what I expect to do with mine but of course your needs may differ from mine.

Anyone intending to install Vista will of course be worrying about where they get a 1TB 2.5" disk and a 16GB DIMM from ;) .

That's correct, but I'm going for dual boot (maybe even triple-boot if OS X Leopard works good), and since I don't have a memory card I'll have to stick with the 1GB RAM/80GB HDD linux version. But the hell with it, it's only more 50€ and a better battery :D

I was thinking of trying Leopard as well. I see someone successfully installed it on an MSI Wind, although the last I read the wireless card wasn't working, which is a bit of a show-stopper.

It was running a Hackintosh that first got me into Macs. Two years later we have three Macs in the house and I am waiting for my new 3G iPhone. It just goes to show that breaching Apple's licensing conditions can be good for them.

The SSD is not soldered, the RAM is, I also upgraded with another stick of 1gb or ram ddr2 667. The ram upgrade is pain in the ass. You have to undo 80% of the screws and its on the bottom of the motherboard. The SSD is connected via a ZIF ribbon, which tells me the 1.8" ipod Toshiba drive will work. I ordered one off ebay. I bought the ONE yesterday, I also installed xp, and the drivers for xp can be found on the acer Taiwan, but I found them on my own on other sites. The SSD with xp is god awful slow... I have some screen shots under the Software xp which shows the speed of the SSD. Regards to all.

I noticed you said the SSD w/ xp is terribly slow... should I be concerned about using Linux w/ the SSD? How slow is the One's SSD?

Up until reading a few of these posts, I was kinda excited about the SSD because I've heard they are generally fast, silent, and durable... I just ordered my One online (8GB SSD version) a few hours ago and ordered an 8GB SD card from the same company... Should I call the company and cancel the order for the 8GB SD card and start looking for a HDD that uses ZIF? I noticed on Ebay that there are some SSDs that use a ZIF connection, but they were all extremely expensive... The HDDs using the ZIF connectors seem more common.
Also, I noticed others in this forum mention some converters (being sold on Ebay) that allow one to convert the connector from ZIF to IDE (if I remember correctly)... however, I don't see how this can be very beneficial considering there seem to be very few options for HDD or SSD that use this connector, either.

Please let me know what my options are here...

Don't worry about it in Linux, for some reason its really snappy. But windows is a different beast... I ended reloading Linux on it and its awsome, have no worries and enjoy your new One

No problem adding RAM. There is an empty DDR2 slot.

I got my Aspire One today (8G/Linux) and installed a 512MB DDR2 4200 I had lying around into the spare slot on the motherboard, giving it 1G total.

    Motherboard/memoryslot access instructions here: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/show ... ight=bb320

I have an Asus EeePC 2G and so far I am very impressed with the One.

Has anyone successfully removed or replaced their SSD yet? If so, what is the level of difficulty with this? I'm already a little nervous about the RAM installation; there's already a Aspire One on ebay that somebody damaged trying to do this (RAM) upgrade.

The numbers are a bit confusing.

    ddr2 5300 is 667MHz, whereas DDR2 4200 is 533 MHz, which matches the One's speed.

So anything faster than 533 (DDR2 4200) will work ?
