My 1.5GB/160GB Acer runs just fine with XP. On my home desktop, I just installed Win 7 and I so far I think the program is great. However, I wonder what advantage I would have with putting Win 7 on my Acer? I seriously doubt it will make the Acer run faster.

IMHO, the main improvement the Acer needs is faster video. Webpages take much longer to load than any of my other computers. Whether the puny processor or the video driver is mainly to blame for this, I don't believe Win 7 will improve the performance.

Yes, I am a gadget guy and have most of the latest electronic toys. Yes, I love my Acer for on-the-go traveling. Yes, so far I think Win 7 on my desktop is great, but could ANYONE give me a reason to spend $150 plus to put Win 7 on my Acer? There's no way I'm trying the RC version on my Acer since it will basically drop dead on March 1st of next year. Then there will have to be another complete reinstall.

Re trying it on my Acer is just way too much trouble. On my desktop, I just put another hard drive that was getting dusty on my shelf in my desktop and install Win 7. If I didn't like it, I could easily jerk the drive out, snap my XP drive back in and that would be it.

For me, I don't even have a DVD drive (portable) for my Aspire yet, I just did it for the challlenge. I partitioned 30gb of my HDD using Acronis and download the RC of 7, then mounted with Magic Iso, and it installed. Now, the specs are 16gb of a partition. I was going to put games on it. However it uses just enough system (mine 660 out of 1.5 gb) RAM to make games tougher, so I left them on my XP. I don't have anti-virus on it yet, but will go with Avira, smaller footprint. I liked 7 enough to put it on my desktop and got rid of Vista. I figure by next March I'll purchase 7 or they'll extend the license. On my desktop 7 has run great. On my laptop it has as well minus the games, which do better on the smaller footprint of XP. I will erase my partition of 7 when the time comes or sooner, but its fun to learn and play with. Good Luck

Hmmm.... XP will always be the speedier OS. Win7 runs surprisingly well on netbooks despite being "new". Vista when it was new was a resource hog and is slow right off the bat, so Win7 is a much welcomed surprise. Right now, no significant reason to do so if you're not into using the newest "it" OS. For productivity, some software will obviously have incompatibilities, and you did mention that it will expire next year.... so yeah I agree, no real important reason to switch to Win7 as of the moment. But eventually we will all have to go Win7, when MS will drop XP from the lineup.(w/c I doubt since XP turned out to be tailored fit on netbooks hehe). ;)

I installed it today just to see and I am loving it and it works good. I currently have my Aspire One AOD150 plugged into a 24" LCD set at 1920x1200 and it works and runs great too (for browsing, email, etc).

I have no plans to go back to XP...

The only issue I'm seeing and of course the bottleneck is the processor and low end video on the netbook, but XP with Avira seems to use about 228 of my 1.5 of RAM, where as Windows 7 is 600 mb of my 1.5. I think 512 mb is shared for video? Anyhow, so gaming works better on the XP machine. However, with the Explorer redone in 7 and some features like Aero Peek, Windows Snapshot it really is a great system so far, no crashes or reboots. 7 works flawlessly on the netbook, so much so I put it on my desktop. For basic processes, Office 2007, Quicken, videos and music, 7 runs on the AOA -150 great. Now on my desktop I notice a HUGE difference between Vista and 7. I have a Dell XPS 420 with a Geforce 8800gt 1gb video card and 4gb RAM.

I couldnt agree with you more as far as the usefulness and speed and looks of Win7. However it seems I can play games better on the XP. I am assuming the reduced load on the OS? Is it possible that since my games are on the XP Partition that when I try to load it with the Win7 partition that could be causing a bottleneck? I'd love to dump XP for Win7.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the better power management in Windows 7.

I agree with you on the power management. It seems like I can get about an extra hour maybe 45 minutes on my batteries. Like I said I would just switch to 7 if it didn't take away from the gaming portion. I have not decided if it is that or if it is the partition that is causing the change when running games. For example I can run NHL 2009 on XP in medium settings and it runs great. On 7, it runs choppy at the lowest settings, however it is on the XP partition.

Well, I'm going to wait until Win 7 officially debuts before thinking about installing it on my Acer. I've got it running on my "custom" Fry's computer (cira '05ish) and was very impressed with the way it runs and even more impressed in that it found all the drivers that I needed from the git-go (include my nvidia 8800 and my HB wireless printer). I absolutely hate running around the web looking for drivers.

From what I read on this forum, Win 7 does NOT locate all the needed drivers for my Acer though. Is this a correct statement? Since my Acer is primarily a on-the-go browser, at the very least I would want Win 7 to find the driver(s) for my WiFi card.

MY fresh install of windows 7 RC1 had all the drivers (even Wifi) working out of box

You may have to update the drivers (it can do automatecly through Device Manager)
