As a Linux guy I am not too familiar with Windows, but with any luck there is a file called boot.ini in your XP root directory (C:\ for example). Take a loot at it. It contains the entries that you choose from during boot. With less luck, this file is situated in your Vista root, meaning that your boot loader is replaced by one that points directly to Vista right now. In that case, you will have to "repair" windows XP before you can remove Vista.

All you have to do is boot up Windows XP (Earlier version of Windows as it would say on the boot menu), go to start menu » Run and type in %HOMEDRIVE%\boot.ini
A notepad document will pop up and then you will have to delete the line where it says everything about Vista. Everything is going to be in one line. Save changes and done!

I don't think that there is a way of putting partitions together but you can format it and use it as a data partition. Well, that's what I do. I have 30 GB Vista partition, 10 GB Linux Partition and 80 GB Data partition. I keep the data on different partition because if I have to reinstall an OS, I only format the OS partition, so the data still is there. No backing up or anything. :)

You can merge partitions together using tools such as partition magic... etc. A search on the internet will give you tonnes of results.

If you have ububtu already, why didn't you use the built in partition tool called qparted?
