Hi all - damn Aspire has just got the dead screen no boot problem. Within warrenty, so it'll be going back. However, is there any way I can open the case and remove the HDD (120Gb version), read the contents (NTFS filesystem) on a desktop, put it all back together without it being obvious, ie so I can still get the warrenty repair? Possibly a tall order, but there's some fairly critical stuff on there since the last backup a week ago.

Any info or pointers much appreciated.

    Mike.

of course you can put it in a desktop, but however, make sure that your SATA connector has a 3.3+ Volt railing, if it has none, your drive won't work. and also, taking it apart won't void warranty, but if you ruined something during the process, you will void warranty.

Thanks for this - got around the problem by flashing the BIOS form a USB stick. Details elsewhere on this forum. Worked fine, but thanks for your help.

You can buy an external USB case for it. I just bought a Rocketfish case on Amazon for 49 cents (+ $6 shipping, haha).

    Turn around!
I wouldn't open it if it was still in warranty, it might have a sticky patch on the inside. Companies use stick patches or easy tear labels to determine wether they've been tampered with or not. You'll have to put a post in the dissmantle section or ask someone who's dissmantled one if they found a patch or label on the inside. ;) A heads up just in case!
