I wanted to rename my computer from the default installation name which is "Acer-followed by some kind of a serial number" (not matching the one on the back of my machine). I was at a friends house and looked through the log file on their router and noticed that this Acer name was recorded and began to think i am leaving a trail behind wherever i connect. I changed the name to "default" BUT now it reads "Default-a4596bd3" in the log file of the subject router.

Steps I took to change the name in XP: Start, Control Panel, System, Computer name tab, Change button, then entered Default, (it only shows "default" here but on router log file Default-a4596bd3).

    How can I change this??!

    Please help.

    Thanks

That looks like a hex number, like the MAC address of your wireless card. Just a guess, but I'm thinking you can't change that, as it is hard-coded into the chipset. You can change your machine name, though.

You said this is Windows, right? In that case, right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, then go to the Computer Name tab, click on Change, then name it whatever you wish. Hit Apply, then OK, then it'll tell you it needs to reboot. Let it reboot, then when it comes up, it should be named whatever you named it. Hope that helps.
