is it a good idea to replace linpus with unbuntu and if yes is it easy to do, my plan was to download ubuntu to my xp pc then transfer it to a usb stick then put the stick into my acer aspire linpus and some how install it, also im a complete novice to linux and dont understand things like root and bin file and rpm file so could it be tricky

I would probably hold off for now...most builds of Ubuntu do not support the full functionality of the AA1 but projects such as ONELinux will help. Personally I would wait for them to make their first release (sometime in the next week, I believe).

The real question is why do you want, or think you need to change Linpus?
If the interface bothers you there are at least three ways to change it and keep Linpus.

1 - First enable advanced mode (notes in beginners section), then right click the desktop and then use "system", "add remove software".
2 - I use VLC so I cannot comment, how did you download it?
3 - You can ask for a password (I do not mean the BIOS one), I don't have the thread in my head, details are in the forum, please search.
