Run Linux from USB stick on XP machine

    I bought my machine with XP installed to run specific Windows programmes and it's fine.

    I'd like to try Linux, running it from a USB memory stick, any suggestions which Linux version would be best??

    ps, I did do some searching but couldn't see a direct answer.
