Is there a way to dimm the screen to save energy an extend running time?
The KDE utility Powersave doesn't work.
BTW: Does the cpu frequency scaling works? I don't know how to figure it out.

The screen brightness is unfortunately being controlled by the BIOS. Older ones allowed lower settings. Newer BIOS versions have it at 50% as it's lowest as far as I can remmember. This was so ACER can hide the flickering problem with the LCD on some units.

CPU scaling works, but I'm on the GNOME version of Mandriva.

I think this is a misunderstanding. I don't want to overrule BIOS setting (although this would fine).
I would like (like in XP) control the brightness or even switch off the backlight. If this are commands to
bios, it must work also from LINUX. But how?

I use the same method and have it at three clicks from its lowest setting, seems a good balance between brightness and saving battery :)

In one of the other posts (does mandriva work 100%), there is an explanation to uninstall kpowersave and install guidance-power-manager. In this, you can set screen settings as you need for battery power.

Also, try your screensaver settings. There should be a setting for "blank screen".
