Hi Phil

See you have changed your mind and returned to Linpus. As you can see from my signature I have Ubuntu booting from a USB stick. I did this so that I could try it out before removing Linpus. Now I hardly ever use it as Linpus does everything I want.

Screensaver can be changed by selecting Settings, then Display Settings. You will see the Screensaver button at the bottom left hand corner, click that and select from the LONG list. I use Cosmos.

Best wishes.

Hi,

I've got Desktop settings and Display, but I can't see Display settings. When I pick Display, it shows me a very boring window showing my screen resolution and all other options greyed.

Gald you're back. Been somewhere nice?

Hi again Phil

Screensaver.png[/attachment:1igtiyl2]
I assume from your comments that the button I refer to is also grayed out. If it is you need to try another tack. Have you activated the ability to click the right mouse button on your desktop and bring up a Menu?

If not look at the last post in this link for instructions on how to do it,
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22&p=84242&hilit=right+click+menu#p84242

Hi Phil

Interesting that in the Acer manual it says you should be able to change screensavers under that section, so much for manuals. If you enable the right click menu the screen I show will be available.

With regards to the screenshot I had to use terminal commands to enable the PrtSc button to copy the screen. As you can see I do not have the standard Acer desktop and I cannot remember if the PrtSc key worked with that. I know it did not when I changed to the XFCE desktop.

Anyway here is what I did,

Open Terminal by pressing and holding the Alt+F2 keys
Then click Run
With the terminal open do the following,
Type - xhkconf
Press - PrtSc - key
Press - y - to overwrite current setting
Press - 2 - for application
Type - /usr/bin/gnome-screenshot - (this command will vary according to the function you want to activate)
Press - 3 - to disable error messages
Press - y - to accept
Then - - Reboot.

If my instruction have worked when you now press the PrtScreen key a box should open showing the allocated name, this can be changed, and giving you an option where to save image.

Hope this all works for you.

You know, sometimes it's the simple things in life that beat you.
It never occurred to me that this was fitted with a fairly standard keyboard with a PrtSc button.

As soon as I pressed the PrtSc/SysRq button........I had a screenshot. Very XP and very simple.

Sadly though I keep pressing the Escape button but so far have failed to escape from this life of tedium and drudgery.

You really are so helpful though.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil

Glad it worked OK for you, have you got that right click working yet and your screensaver sorted out.

Would not like to see you getting board!!!

Actually, I've only learned how to do a screen shot. Screensaver still eludes me.

Last week my Acer Aspire One was delivered running Linpus. I have enabled the advanced menu and changed repositories to Fedora 8. So far I am very happy with it but I would like to personalise it a bit. I have found the Screensaver button but on pressing it I only get the option of blank screen or pictures (which is currently what it is set to), not a long list as intimated by the above post. How do I go about adding further screensavers?

Cheers

Hi Fairnuf and welcome

The photos you refer to are contained in the Pictures Folder under the following /usr/share/applications/screensavers. It is a root owned folder so if you are going to do anything with it you will need to do it via a root command.

The following is the list I get when I open the Screensaver,
screenshot2.png[/attachment:3fs8ztk8]
Not that long a list but better than blank and Aspire photos.
I assume like Phil you have the standard Acer desktop. Now as you can see I have an Xfce desktop and I now wonder if it has something to do with that.

When you mention fedora 8 did you do it via the following command, as that is about the only thing I have done with Fedora unless somewhere in the change to the xfce desktop that has given me the above list.

sudo yum install fedora-release

Yes that's the command I used. I haven't managed to find out how to get the switchable desktop though I have seen reference to it in a few posts. I#m sure the instructions are here somewhere!

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my query and for the welcome.

Hi Fairnuf

I did not use the How to Switch method. The one I followed is in this link,

viewtopic.php?f=39&t=4310

It looks daunting but once you start it is fairly straight forward. My first recommendation to you would be to google "macles" he has a great blog for the aspire one and on about the second page there are instructions on how to create a backup/restore USB disk. It restores to the last backup you made and not to the factory default as per the Acer CD.
It certainly gave me the confidence to play about with Linpus.

Here is the link to macles,

Best wishes.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have followed a couple of links from here to Macles so will probably check that out some more as well.

Hi Fairnuf and Phil

I have been doing some trial and error stuff regarding screensavers with the following results.

The default Aspire One screensaver showing photos of the Aspire is activated by selecting the Pictures folder under Screensaver Preferences.
This actually displays the contents of the /home/user/Pictures/Photoframe directory and this is a user owned folder so you can copy/paste into it with no problems. You may want to try a couple before deleting any of the existing Aspire ones.
I have just tried adding some of my photos and here is an example,

Screensaver2.png[/attachment:hjo22lyn]
May not be a complete solution for what you want but it is a step.
I should add that of the ones on my list I only find Cosmos of interest.

Best wishes
