I've been searching the internet for days trying to figure out why my card slot will not work no matter what I do. I have the model AO751h-1401.
I have tried XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Ubuntu and it does not show up on any of them. I have tried installing the drivers from the Acer website and they seem to install ok, but the slot still does absolutely nothing. I have read somewhere (forgot where) that it may be a Jmicron reader instead of Realtek? I have tried those drivers too, and still nothing. Am I missing something here? Maybe the wrong drivers? I am not the original owner of this either. I don't have the receipt or packaging. My friend sold it to me cheap because of the freezing issue that it seems other people have been experiencing.
Everything else seems to be working correctly besides this slot. Thanks for any help

I don't have / haven't even worked on your particular model, so this is purely speculation. But is there an option in the BIOS to enable / disable the card reader? If the BIOS says it's turned off then Windows sure aint gonna see it.

First of all, let's make sure that the hardware is working and is not broken/faulty: Do you see a Generic-Multi-Card USB Device (or something like that) in the Disk Drives catergory, in the Device Manager? Do you see the same device (Generic-Multi-Card USB Device) in the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media button at the System Tray?
If you use Windows 7 you can try to unistall the drivers for it and then right-click and Update Driver Automatically, so that Windows will search for the specific (and suitable) driver.

Have you tried the specific card in another computer? There is a possibility that the SD card is faulty, I currently have two bricked SD cards myself, so this is something common.

Thank you for the quick replies. Both are really good suggestions. I thought the same thing about the bios, however I have noticed that the BIOS on these machines are severely crippled when it comes to options. I have not noticed an option for the card reader in there unless its in some hidden spot.
Also the card reader does not show up in device manager. All I see under drives is the hard drive. Are these card readers soldered to the motherboard or do they use some sort of ribbon cable like the keyboard does? Or perhaps a pci-e slot? I will need to go to the store later and get a new screwdriver since mine broke while attempting to open this computer up due to tight screws. I guess thats what I get for getting a screw driver set at the dollar store.
I was considering the idea that the card reader may be faulty since I have not seen any other posts on the internet about this. If it is faulty, will acer be able to fix it on warranty since I do not have the proof of purchase or the packaging since I bought this second hand.

I am not sure, since at least in Greece you need to provide the receipt. However, you can check out this page which displays your warranty according to the serial number of your netbook. If you live away from a service center you should email them or call them and ask if they can provide the service required, based on the results of the page I mentioned (since you don't have the receipt).

Incidentaly, I noticed my card reader not responding today also. Its been a few days since I last used it. The only thing I have been doing in the meantime is messing with some bluetooth headphones that I did not get to work yet. I will see if it works next time i need it, or we will have to do a little investigating.

No where in the thread to I see where the OP tried more than on SD card. As someone else pointed out, SD cards are fragile and I'm guessing if one became unreadable, it would also not show up under My Computer.

My Acer is a stock unit except that I switched the hard drive to a totally clean unit. I then installed Win 7 on it and Win 7 found most if not all the drivers that make the unit work (including the SD slot). I mainly leave a 16MB card in the slot 100% of the time that contains my password program and data. If I'm traveling and I don't have my Acer with me (left in hotel room, etc), I take the SD card with me to protect my passwords and other valuable data. My SD slot reads at least up to a 16GB card (again with only the drivers that Win 7 loaded).

As pointed out previously, my SD card(s) show up in Device Manager IF a card in in the slot. IF the unit of the OP is truly inop in the SD slot, I suspect the previous owner might has screwed it up by jamming an SD card in too strongly.

All is not lost as you can always use a USB card reader.

If it makes any difference to you, my driver data says "Generic-Multi-Card USB Device" provided by Microsoft, driver date 6/21/06, driver version 6.1.7600.16385.

I tried using the SD card out of my camera (known working) in the slot and still the same thing.I would try a different type of card but I do not have any other devices that use the other types so don't feel like wasting the money. Does it show up under disk drives in hardware manager or somewhere else?
I opened up my computer just a little bit ago to maybe see if a cable had come unplugged or if the solder on the board looks bad. The solder looks pristine. I noticed both the card reader and the right side usb port are on the same card. Nothing looks wrong with the card at all. I reseated the ribbon cable to see if that would help. Still the same thing. The usb port on that chip works perfectly though.
What OS are you guys finding runs best on this computer? I will try reinstalling and reinstalling drivers to see if that helps at all before sending it in for repair. Rather not be without the computer for a week if an easy reinstall would fix it.

As my sig says, I'm using Win 7 Ultiamte x86 on my D250, working fine on 2Gb RAM. I just checked out my device manager tho, and there is no card reader being reported. However once I insert a card it's a different story. I end up with a "Generic- Multi-Card USB Device" showing up under Disk Drives.

The only problem I've ever had with the card reader, is occasionally I will insert a card and it will do nothing. Other times I may insert the card and Windows will tell me it's not formatted yet. Clean the contacts on the card and these errors go away. Have you tried blowing the card reader slot out with some compressed air? Might just be some dirty contacts inside.

Yes, I agree that is the way it works. The SD card reader ONLY shows up in "device manager" and "my computer" when there is an SD card in the slot.

Sounds more and more like a hardware issue.

I agree. I talked to the customer service and after telling them like 50 times that I have already tried to restore the computer they finally gave me the address.

Also if anyone is interested, I plan on modifying this netbook to turn it into a tablet pc. I will start a thread on it too. I do want to get the card reader working before I tear up the computer as the warranty would be void then.

If you haven't already, look in the Hack and Modification section. I was browsing thru there last night and someone's done a similar project, you might find some inspiration in their work.
