I bought an 8Gb Kingston SD flash memory card to add memory to my AAO which only has the original 8Gb SSD as I guessed that would be a cheaper way to add memory to the AAO than replacing the existing 8Gb SSD with a 16Gb one.
I have read that the left hand slot can take up to 16Gb SD cards but the Kingston is not recognised at all. When I pop the Kingston sd out and pop in a a Sandisk 4Gb card it's is recognised immediatly as having been formatted in my Canon Powershot A640. Strange thing is that I put a txt file on it and although not recognised by either SD it is recognised in a USB memory card reader.
Is it usual that some SDs are recognised and others not?

It happens, but it's not typical. If your Powershot can handle SDHC cards, you might try formatting the 8GB card in the camera.
