Why are SD cards so slow?
The fastest is class 6 which is only 6MB/sec.
I don't see any difference with write speed so I assume read and write are both maxed out at 6MB/sec.

Class 6 means minimum, not maximum of 6MB/sec.

that's called Sandisk Extreme III or Lexar Professional ;) Or close to anyways.

I don't know if the card readers are UDMA or not (doubtful) or else the newer sandisk Ex III UDMA cards would be great.

SD readers have nothing to do with UDMA (it's not IDE / ATA). The SDHC speed depends on 25MHz / 50 MHz capability of the reader. =>
