So I've been reading around here for a couple of days now, and I learned about Sdxc (for those of you that don't know, it would increase the capacity of the SD card up to 2TB supposedly). If the technology were available, would it be possible to simply upgrade either (or both) expansion ports?

It may not be that simple. I'm quite sure that SDXC needs some brand new controller and the one AA1 uses (JMB385) is not SDXC compatible at all. It is possible to upgrade one of its card readers to SDXC by disconnecting the port from JMB385 and rewiring it to some add-in adapter mounted on USB port or Mini PCI-E, as long as such an adapter is available in the market.
