    Hi - I've ordered a o2 modem (which is a sierra wireless compass 885), is it possible to get it to work with the acer one or do I need to format the drive and install xp? :?

    There *seem* to be drivers of some sort here:

    can I do anything with those?

    See my post on how to install the E220 modem.

    If you run the wvdialconf in terminal it will show you if the modem is recognised, then find the o2 settings and input them and set your device to the relevant port etc (/dev/ttyUSB0 or similar)

    maybe this would work?
    I found the following 02 settings after a quick google. You should only need to change the modem line where it reads /dev/tty/USB0

    [Dialer Defaults]
    Init1 = ATZ
    Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    Baud = 9600
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
    ISDN = 0
    Phone = *99#
    Password = password
    Username = mobileweb
    Dial Command = ATDT

    [Dialer O2]
    Init2 = ATZ
    Init3 = ATE0 V1 &D2 &C1 S0=0 +IFC=2,2
    Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”mobile.o2.co.uk”
    ISDN = 0
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    Baud = 460800

    I tried it, doesn't seem to work and it's limited to 500kps and you have to keep messing around with the command line. This is just too much work for me, I'm going to install XP and be done with it. Linux is just too much hassle.

    It's true: Linux has a problem with the newest hardware. New devices are shipped with Windows- and hopefully Mac- drivers.Then the Linux people have to sort it out themselves, and that takes time. This will probably be true for a long time. Good luck with your 'other' One. --Japser.
