    Re: SKYPE: cannot install

You have actually extracted the file as the instructions say, have you, not just viewed it in the archiver window?

    Re: SKYPE: cannot install

    OK, I'm 99% there.

I went back to the "Downloads" tab in "My Documents". In there was the original zip file and a folder: "SKYPE.SH". I opened the folder and...there it is. A file named "SKYPE.SH"

I opened the file and after a patch update...SKYPE has been installed. The SKYPE icon now appears among the other "connect" icons on the desktop.

    So far, so good.

Now, going back to the "Downloads" folder. The original .zip file is still in there along with the SKYPE.SH folder. I'm assuming that the original .zip file can now be safely discarded.

What about the folder "skype.sh"? May that folder also be safely deleted?

    Re: SKYPE: cannot install

I'm reading the install guide instructions and yeah, now they make sense but they're not written as clearly as they could be.

    BETTER:

"Download Skype by clicking here (link) and "save to disc" using "My Downloads" as the destination folder. Right click the .zip file and choose "open with xarchiver"....

I know next to nothing about computers but I'll bet I'd make a half-decent technical writer!

Anyway, I need to know if I may now safely discard the file "skype.sh" (which is an extension file) or if I need to save it somewhere.

As far as I know you can saefly remove it; if in doubt, rename it and see if Skype still works. Assuming it does, delete it!

Indeed; they could do a good deal better at using Linux as well! A good deal of the discussion on these forums arises from working round the Acerisation of Linux!

    Re: SKYPE: cannot install

I did end up renaming the file and skype worked pretty well until it crashed and my AA1 locked up about ten minutes into a call. Took forever for it to reboot. I have no idea what might have caused that but when I reconnected I made sure my browser was closed. Had no further trouble after that. My re-connected call went on for a full hour without any problems.

Deleted the aforementioned folder/file out of the 'downloads' folder. Skype runs fine.
