    Hi all

This is my first post. Please excuse me if this has been covered off lots before.

I have purchased an Aspire from Asda which came with a version of Linux.

How easy is it to download Skype to my computer?

How easy is it in general to download and use programs when using Linux? Does the operating system require very technical minded people?

with that done exit and then right click select system at the top you will see Add/remove programs select this and do a search for the type of program you want and then select the program and install

    Hi mike46

I'm not sure I understand any of that - I'm brand new to Linux.

Where do I type all that stuff?

Try here for Skype install info: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/09/05 ... page3.html

Read the whole article for more tips. Don't install Firefox 3 this way though as there is an easier way as shown on Macles blog which is a great source of info and works a treat: http://macles.blogspot.com/ .

When it says open a terminal hit Alt-F2 then type terminal and you get a DOS type interface.

I'm not a Linux user but these articles are pretty good if you are reasonably PC literate.

One thing I forgot to mention is create a back up of your aspire one before tinkering! Macles has a great way of doing this with a USB stick, it was posted in late Dec /early Jan if I remember correctly.

    Hi Thomask,

Just remember that Linpus is based on fedora 8, so if for instance you wanted to install Opera you would download the Opera Linux version for fedora 7or 8. ;)

    Thanks all.

I've downloaded Skype, as per the reghardware site, yet after clicking the install file it prompts me for a password. Something to do with 'root'?

    Hi Thomask,

When you first took the Acer out of the box and turned it on did you do the following.
    1. Choose an language.
    2. Set a password.
    3. Set the time and date.

Because when you type su at the prompt in the terminal or install software via your route then you have to enter the password you set the Acer up with.

IE permission to work at root. (this is for security)

    Thanks

    What is the 'terminal' screen?

I'm guessing I must have set up a password and forgot doing it. I have a few in mind it may be. How many attempts do I get before the system locks up / crashes / soemthing bad happens?
