    See above.

If you already had it working before, that's all you need to get it back up. Not familiar enough with the modem to know what else needs to be done to get Ubuntu to see it, but on the kernel side, the above instructions are all you need.

    Hey Sickboy,
Is the patch for the wifi lights mentioned earlier (http://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/347/) the one you used. When compiling my own kernel with your .config I seem to get inconsistent blinking. If you do use a different one can you link or post it. Also were there any other patches you used?

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

I have one strange problem, mabye related to this
When I make a 'lsusb' I can see the modem.
But when I try USBView the program can't find "/proc/bus/usb/devices"
I can't connect to the modem because the system can't find it????

This is the only problem ;-)
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Re: SlCKB0Y Kernel 2.6.28 Downloads - Update with Website!

I just got an Acer One 10" two days ago and I'm having trouble installing this SICKBOY kernel. I have 8.10 running with only some minor issues that I hope the custom kernel will fix. I've never installed a new kernel myself and don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I downloaded linux-image-2.6.28sickboy-kuki_0.4_i386.deb and double clicked to install. When I tried to start up again, it crashed trying to load the new kernel. Then I went back to the generic version and installed (double clicked) on linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki_0.4_i386.deb. Now it seems to get a little further along, but crashes during the orange bar Ubuntu load. Some of the things it says are:

[ 1.828804] intelfb: Video mode must be programmed at boot time.
modprobe: FATAL: Could no load /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/modules.dep: no such file or directory.

There is some other stuff written but I didn't type it out. Does this information get written to a file somewhere?

What am I doing wrong? To an inexperienced kernel person, it sounded like all I had to do is install a file, reboot, and it would be done. What am I missing? I still have this left over config-2.6.28sickboy-kuki file that I don't know what to do with. Thanks for any help.

My guess is that the hardware in your Acer is different to the Aspire One. This kernel is optimized to only support the Aspire One hardware, not the hardware for other devices.

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

    UPDATE
I just installed VirtualBox and when I activated USB the internal modem was found immediately ???
Why can't I find it whith my ubuntu???
The modem is visible when I do a 'lsusb' but it's not associated with an USB-port (as I understand it)

    Any suggestions anyone?

    UPDATE 2 SOLVED!!!
Like so many times..... why do it the simple way????

    I read this how-to. http://pharscape.org/networkmanager-0.7.0-and-3g-wwan-modems.html
    So simple!
And I think it was working from start, but I tried to install other softwares like the Vodafone
Well now I'm happy. Everything works.

I'm having the same problem as jango with acerhdf. I think it's something to with the acerhdf makefile code but I'm too much of a linux noob to see what the issue is.

I guess it need the modules package for 2.6.28.
Getting the only from jaunty and adding a symlink should make it work...

    Sickboy,

Could you do another aussie a favor and provide some instructions on how to get the kernel module for acerhdf working with your kernel?

BTW - thanks for the kernel.

I've noticed with this kernel I get the following error when trying to build modules.

    Code:
    carl@carl-laptop:~/Desktop/acerhdf_kmod$ make
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build SUBDIRS=/home/carl/Desktop/acerhdf_kmod modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
    make: *** [default] Error 2
    carl@carl-laptop:~/Desktop/acerhdf_kmod$
I have checked and "build" directory does not exist. I created one but i still get the same result

Re: SlCKB0Y Kernel 2.6.28 Downloads - Update with Website!

    One thing to check.

On my non sickboy kernel system the /lib/modules/2.6.27-9-generic/build is a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-9-generic

So I would make sure you have the kernel headers installed, if not install them. Then go to the /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki directory and create a symbolic link named build and link it to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki . Double check my directory names here in this part. I don't use that kernel so I may have a typo in the actual directory names for sickboys kernel.

Then go to the acerhdf directory and try rebuilding.

i have headers for multiple 2.6.27 kernels but not 2.6.28 kernels do i need those ones?

When can they be downloaded from and how do i set up a symlink?

Re: SlCKB0Y Kernel 2.6.28 Downloads - Update with Website!

Did you download sickboys kernel-headers package and install it? He has both the kernel and the kernel headers he makes available every release.

If not download that deb file and install it.

    As for the symbolic link.

After you have the kernel-headers installed.

Go to your /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki directory. Make sure if you manually created a build directory before you delete it now. If you already have a symbolic link named build, you shouldn't need to proceed.

Create the symbolic link like this

    ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build

Again, same disclaimer as before. Your going to want to make sure those directory names are correct. I don't use the sickboy kernel so the directory names may not be correct (although I think they are).

Thanks. I have got the header and installed them and setup a symlink.

    Still have a problem though.

    Code:

    carl@carl-laptop:~/acerhdf_kmod$ sudo make install
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki/build SUBDIRS=/home/carl/acerhdf_kmod modules
    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki'
      Building modules, stage 2.
      MODPOST 1 modules
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28sickboy-kuki'
    cp acerhdf.ko /lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki//kernel/drivers/misc/
cp: cannot create regular file `/lib/modules/2.6.28sickboy-kuki//kernel/drivers/misc/': Is a directory
