I can't really think of too many reasons why my kernel wouldnt work with easy peasy. Maybe try downloading it and double clicking on it to install in easy peasy?

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

Sorry in advance for this newbee question:

I have followed this fine guide to get Ubuntu 8.10 running: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L

I am using the standard kernel and the open source ath5k drivers that comes from the package "linux-backports-modules-intrepid" (disabled "Atheros wireless card"). Works all in all fine.

If I installed the cutdown "linux-image-2.6.28_Sickboy.AA1-20080112_i386.deb" kernel will it use the athk5 drivers again or the proprietary driver "Atheros wireless card" and will it work out of the box or do I have to anything/disable something etc.? Just wondering.

And is it "linux-headers-2.6.28_Sickboy.Kuki.0.1_i386.deb" that goes with the cutdown version to?

Thank you in advance. And thanks to SICKBOY for all the hard work.

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

I have now been fiddling around with the lightweight kernel and its great!
No problems what so ever, fast boot time and no lagging while surfing or doing other things.
    Thank you so much!

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

Ignore my last post. :) Who dares wins!!

I installed the cutdown kernel and the headers for the big version and everything works fine out of the box. Wireless and everything.

I haven't really tested it in details but so far huge thanks to SICKBOY!

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

I've downloaded and installed linux-image-2.6.28_Sickboy.Kuki.0.1_i386.deb, yet it doesn't appear on the grub boot menu.

During installation there were no errors or warnings.

How do I confirm if it has been installed, then how do I get it to work ?

    Thanks :)

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

    Hi all,

Following my posting a few days ago, I want to come back to the issue of 3G not working.
To bad that this is not working yet, everything else works just great!

As SICKBOY wrote, the kernel was compiled with USB serial enabled, which should take care of 3G USB devices.
I am afraid this does not work for me.

By the way, I am using a HUAWEI 220 dongle.

Below are two printouts from the command dmesg -c done after inserting the dongle, first for the 'old' kernel and after that the same for the SICKBOY kernel.

As you can see the output is clearly different.
The most obvious difference is that the 'old' kernel attaches the device as ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1, which would be the work of USB_SERIAL.

As the device does work on the previous kernel I think the conclusion that something is missing in the new kernel would be justified.

Anyone seen the same and found a workaround?

    Looking forward to your input!

    Peter.

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

    uname -r shows:
    2.6.28-rc8-custom-aa1

Double clicking on the deb file shows this is already installed.
Does that mean it's installed it but not configured Grub for me ??
How do I enable it in grub ?

    Thanks

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

When you installed it the first time do you remember being prompted to either keep your current version of menu.lst or overwrite with the package manager's version? If so and you chose to keep your current one, then the installer would not have updated it. You could try
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.28_Sickboy.Kuki.0.1_i386.deb
and see if that fixes it.

Thanks I tried that and it said it wasn't installed.

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.28_Sickboy.Kuki.0.1_i386.deb

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

For what it's worth, I am seeing exactly the same behavior. 3G USB works with standard install of Ubuntu, but fails in the same way with the new kernel.

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

    Got it to work.

I manually added it to the menu.lst:

    title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.28
    uuid 7b012cdc-f3e8-466f-92ea-4ee1090459cb
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28 root=UUID=7b012cdc-f3e8-466f-92ea-4ee1090459cb ro quiet splash
    initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28
    quiet

Rebooted and now uname -r shows:
    2.6.28

The LED flashes during wifi activity, so I think it's sorted :)
(any way to get the led to stay solid when wifi is connected ??)

    Thanks :)

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

    With regards to the 3G not working as reported earlier;

After a lot of Googling and trying I got things working!

    The solution I found is:

prior to inserting the dongle issue the command:

    Code:
    sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003
then plug in the modem and it is detected by Network Manager.
Connection can be made in the usual way.

This is a problem with gnome-power-manager.
Select System|Preferences|Power Manager, and uncheck "Dim Display when Idle" on the AC and Battery tabs, and "Reduce Backlight Brightnes" on the Battery tab and you will solve your problem

can you do a fresh boot of the generic ubuntu kernel, then plug in the 3g and post the output of lsmod?

    Re: SlCKB0Y/Kuki kernel 2.6.28 Release

thanks for the kernel! boot up is so fast and things feel much snappier.
i have a problem though. i've been trying to install vmware player or virtualbox and i'm having trouble because both need to compile against the new kernel. I have installed the headers from the site you provided, but i'm still not able to get either of these installed. any suggestions?
    thanks
