OK. i gave up on booting into my external drive, so instead i mounted the image, and ran osinstall.mpkg Has anyone tried this? If they have, can they give me any pointers? Because im about to give up on the darn thing!

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Some made it, but I just couldn't...
I got the kp shown in my first post and afaik snow leopard's kextcache is the only way to solve it!
You can still give it a shot...

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

    Heyas, i have a question:
I had to reinstall and start from scratch (erased the HD), now i don't know/remember how to copy the Extensions.mkext and the com.apple.Boot.plist to the correct places before i reboot after the installation. I guess i use the Terminal from the Snow Leopard image? How do i do that?
I get the error message "System config file '/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist' not found" since i couldn't move the 2 files yet... maybe i should go back to 10.5, since i don't really know how to move stuff in Termial, hm? ;)

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

yep, terminal in snow leopard install disc

    cd /volumes/"snow leopard"/
    mkdir Extra
cd /volumes/"the drive & dir containing the files to be copied"/
    cp Extensions.mkext /Volumes/"snow leopard"/Extra/
    cp com.apple.Boot.plist /Volumes/"snow leopard"/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    cp com.apple.Boot.plist /Volumes/"snow leopard"/Extra/

If you have installed SL on an external drive can you copy the files to extra and the other places from a working Leopard install? Also, the files you posted on this page, can those be used for build 380 or are they for 411?

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Copying is certainly ok with leopard, but the "kextcache -update-volume" thing must be done with snow leopard (no need to worry bout this cmd unless you got the kp i wrote abt in the first post)!

The files should be ok for all sl builds, even though there will be lots of annoying warnings in the logs and kills space!
You can always "update" the updated-every-build kexts (the io***.kext s) in your extra extensions.mkext using mkexttool after updating the system.

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

    dear SP1950,

thanks for all of your help.my snow leopard is working 98%. no sleep and no mic input (havent tried the line in).
i havent updated to 421, because i want to wait until there is a more solid solution. i do have one question though:
after updating to 411, i get the io***.kext messages that u mentioned, and u said to just rebuild the mkext....what should i include? i tried to unpack yours and just replace the io kexts in yours with the ones i had in /s/l/e but that didnt work. (no mouse click and no keyboard input, but i was able to move the mouse with the trackpad.)

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

    OK...
I have tried tme and time again to get sL on my AAO. And it must be possible because you guys have done it.
So I have tried using this thread numerous times. I have tried using the MSI wind tutorial which involves installing using osinstall.mpkg and I have tried a tutorial over at infinitemac.com

And every time when either trying to boot the install disc (which is restored to the 3rd partition of my usb hdd with the first being for Leopard (iatkos v7) and the 2nd being for snow leopard (Its 100gb-40gb-9gb respectively)) or the snow install which has been installed from osinstall.mpkg, it gets stuck on the same kp the OP has screenshotted at the bottom of post 1. And because I cant boot the os x snow leopard installer, what can i do?
I understand its a problem with my extensions.mkext but obv i cant make one...
so could someone upload their one for 10a380
or could i get help booting the installer?
Cheers guys, because having been one fo teh guys usually answering questions, i feel like a dick for failing so epically at this...

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

imho: the external drive seems to be the easiest to use, because u can keep its bootloader separate from your main hd's bootloader.

    1. restore the image
    2. point cham2 at the place where u restored the image
    3. copy over the pc_efi v10.1 boot file
    4. dload and copy sp1950's extensions.mkext and com.apple.boot.plist to /Volumes/SnowInstaller/Extra and /Volumes/SnowInstaller/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration respectively.
    5. reboot, press f12 and select your external drive
    6. install as normal, partition if necessary (drive has to be gpt, i tried the mbr hack, but ran into problems, might work on it later)
    ....installing...
    7. mine always failed at the end because it was unable to bless the boot partition, its fine
    8. at that time, start up terminal and copy the Extensions.mkext and com.apple.Boot.plist to the same places as before, but with "SnowHD" instead of "SnowInstaller"
    9. also perform "kextcache -update-volume /Volumes/SnowHD/" -- it should say that there aren't any helper partitions to update, that's expected
    10. repeat step 5, but at the boot prompt, give it the flags "-v rd=disk0s2" ...for yours i think its disk0s3 (0s2 = 1st partition, 0s3= second partition)
    11. it boots!!! =D
    12. once you see the desktop, install cham2 + pc_efi v10.1 on your SnowHD partition.

thats how i was able to do it

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

Hey, wanted to thank you finally, i managed to install 10.6 to my One. =D
Works great so far, i'm still on 10a380 right now but i'll try to update soon (as soon as i understand fully what to do... ;) ).
2 things i try to solve at the moment: I can't somehow install Chameleon 2 (any other solution to boot without USB?) and it runs in 800 x 600/no quartz, sound etc. (too tired right now to figure out what to install, maybe tomorrow, i guess i'll screw it up again anyways...). But still happy & proud of me, since i don't really have a clue about all this.

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

You should include anything essential that is not in /S/L/E
but i can't get voodoohda working in extra, so leave it in /s/l/e

    kexts in extra:
    disabler
realtekr1000 (i found it more stable to put it in extra)
    ionetworkingfamily
    iopcifamily
    uuid
    voodoopowermini
    voodoops2controller

    kexts in /s/l/e
    27ae.......
    voodoohda

you should also have dsmos prior to 10a421, or you can still install netkas's package (some reported that works)

    i uploaded my voodoohda & voodoops2
line in works with my hda

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

google "patch27ae.command" for graphics patch (can't upload anything to the board!)
use voodoohda for sound (use kexthelper to install)

for update, you can just run it through software update until you got 10a411, it's working flawlessly
just stop and wait until you know how to update to 10a421 safely (netkas' blog is a good start for reading)

chameleon: i can't use the installer successfully
i instead grab the binary package and follow the readme to install

    oh, of course
and one more thing... can i just use the 27ae** kexts that are in your extensions.mkext or should i use the patcher and make new ones?
sorry, im a bit confuzed when it comes to this mkext stuff

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

I remember that the gma kexts don't update frequently. Just to be sure, you can compare the versions of the vanilla kexts & the patched kexts using the system profiler/inspecting the version.plist.
If they match, there is no need to repatch the files.

Re: Snow Leopard - working here + guide

playing with pre releases is fun (at least i think so).
It's dangerous too so a readily available snow leo install environment would be useful (i broke my sl like 10 times since i got the dmg)

In your case, things would be easier because you already had a working bootloader in the same hd! Just restore the dmg to the last partition, install the chameleon 2 rc2 bootloader, copy the essential kexts to the extra of snowleo install drive, and boot with the partition.

and the kextcache -update-volume /...... thing will do the job if you have the install disc terminal
