Hi , first post n'all that but could really do with some advice.
Got the 8gb Linux aspire one for my step daughter for xmas.
All going well for around 4 days then got switch off problem. Sent it back to acer who replaced the battery and sent the thing back. All going well for a few days then the damn thing wouldnt boot past the main blue aspire screen. After checking a few forums decided to use the recovery dvd and create a usb recovery which worked a treat......for a couple of days. Then encountered a problem when booting .... would boot right upto the main screen but kept getting hal initialising error and then switch off. Tried usb recovery again but would go through the process as the damn thing switches off after a few minutes!

Rang acer today who then advised me that if its a software issue then I will have to pay £55 to get the thing repaired

Im no it expert but could someone point me in the direction as to whether this is a software or hardware issue?!?!! Can a software issue keep shutting the unit down??

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Many thanks

    Stu

Can you provide a bit more info?

    1. Does it shut down abnormally even when on mains power, or is it only when on battery power?
    2. Can you hear the cooling fan at all?

I think by software problem Acer mean if you have messed up your OS installation by adding/removing some unreliable software.

As you are merely trying to recover your system using only recovery software supplied by Acer then you should not have to forfeit £55 for the privilege.

I suspect that the cooling fan is not working and therefore it is shutting down due to overheating.

If you start it up from cold and press F2 to go into the setup menus, after a short while (no more than a couple of minutes) the cooling fan should kick in.

A fully working machine should sit quite happily in the setup menus with the cooling fan whirring away and should not shut down.

Hi , have just booted , gone into bios settings f2 , left it and the thing switched off. So sounds like cooling fan.
will log job with acer now and wait.................again.

    You're welcome!

I have just taken delivery of 2 A150's today. One of them needs returning because the backlight flickers quite badly and the moulding on the back of the display/lid is a badly fitted.

Thankfully the other one is fine, which is just as well because it's my Dad's birthday present.

Out of 5 AA1s that have passed through my hands 2 have had to be returned as faulty.
