True say ^, also hibernation should be turned off, just suspend to ram instead

After spending a little bit of money, a little bit of time I'd say that XP is now actually not bad. I've put together the steps in one place under steps to a happy xp experience.

Can somebody post HDtach results, after D2D is turned off?

As a comparision, these are the results from an EEE 701 2G

    HDTach results under XP

    Sequential Ranges from 10 to 36 MB/s
    Burst 39.8 MB/s
    Seek 0.7ms
    Average Read 31.6 MB/s at CPU 2%

The actual slowness seems to be an I/O blocking issue.

Sometimes SSD activitiy simply locks the keyboard/mouse. For me this seems to be random.

It's sad to realize that XP is a no go on this otherwise perfect netbook.
Did you tried to install intel chipset utilities?

Maybe some IRQ or DMA is shared with USB.
Can you have a look at IRQs for both the USB controllers and the SSD controller?

Can somebody post a video that shows the poor perfomance of the Acer?
Also, can someone have a look at the IRQ used by the disk and if it is shared by other peripheral?
Did someone tried to install intel App Accelerator stuff, or the Intel matrix drivers? Generally the ICH7 drivers from intel are not installed by the "inf utility". You have to install them manually.
Also, did you tried to relocate the swap file and prefetch to an SD card or pen drive?

I have now ubuntu running totally from a pen drive, with persistency, and it is screaming fast. And the Pen is alot slower than the internal SSD. So it's really strange this poor performance on Windows :(

With the changes I have made recently, I am comfortable with XP's performance with the Aspire. Occasionally there is a "stall" when the SSD is being accessed but the workaround is to try to avoid SSD I/O completely.

Right now I have no page file, no prefetch, a ramdisk for temp, no disk cache for opera (all memory cache) and have moved the My Documents folder over to an SDHC card (as a fixed drive).

BTW, you can use the left Storage Expansion SD slot as a fixed drive using the Hitachi Microdrive driver. It works quite well and is documented on forum.eeeuser.com.

    I will return mine.
The performance is a joke on Windows. Every 30 seconds it stalls.
I already turned off prefetch, swap file (my windows only takes 100mb of ram), installed different drivers, used fat, disabled D2D... It still stalls from time to time, even when I'm just scrolling a web page.

Getting my One on Monday, but I was just wondering what about Vista if anyone's tried it?

Vista will undoubtedly be slower than XP on the One but perhaps it has the right drivers to perform as expected.

Is the performance really that bad? I am confused because there are posts stating that turning off D2D will fix it and that it is faster than the eee 701.

Can persons with the aspire one confirm that windows performs better on it than the eee 900 or eee 701. I was thinking of getting the "new" eee 900 16GB for $399, or waiting on msi wind linux for $399 but then i saw the acer aspire one.

    What should i do?
btw Can we see more videos of the performance of windows on the aspire one pls. :)

Its comparable to the speed of my 701 after more tweaking....however there are occasional lags or stalls that I havent seen on the 701. I used TuneXP for a few tweaks and set some myself. Basically I'd say this is a good as it gets unless a bios update or some optimized ssd driver arrives. I booted Linux from a USB key and the performance difference was night and day. The hardware is fine...something in XP isn't optimized...sorry no videos...imagine XP occasionally disk thrashing :)

How about installing XP completely to an SDHC card? There are plenty of tutorials on the net for the EEE etc. to do that which would fix the problem of not having to access the internal SSD at all for the OS+Apps.

i think this is doable. though i havent tried it. lets just hope there will be driver updates for ssd and that the i/o speed issues will be solve. I love acerone's overall package, i just dont understand the big difference in performance bet. linpus and xp.

    It will not work.
Acer One does not support boot from the SD cards.

"Regular" XP does not work on a Pen.

If you all install XP regarding "XP happy experience" thread, all will be just fine. I have no hanging problems and still didn't upgrade my RAM. Just install the drivers too. I also use Office 2007 (just installed a patch) and works great. Even improved my battery life. True to be said, not as fast as running the Linpus, but still a lot faster than eeepc 701. Don't know about 900 eeepc...
