Depends on what applications you are running. Stable? XP is already very stable as long as you know what you're doing and do not install/uninstall alot of questionable software.... Adding another 512mb will improve speed a little, more RAM is always better. Why not add another 1gb and make it 2gb if it's supported. Performance will be most noticeable if you use software that need ALOT of RAM, or if you are the type who opens alot of programs all at the same time. But for casual everyday apps.... 1gb is plenty enough for XP. Cheers.

how much are you willing to spend, and how far are you willing to go?
I believe the ZG5 is the 8.9" model, which requires full dismantle (or close to) to get to the components worth upgrading.
7200rpm is a good upgrade, and should be pretty noticeable. SSD would also be a good upgrade but costly.
may as well go to 1.5GB while you're doing the HDD upgrade, seeing as how a 1GB SODIMM module is like $10-15.
