    The correct steps are:

    1,Disable D2D
2,Format (not fast) SSD using FAT32
3,Install Windows XP SP3 or SP2 and upgrade it to sp3 after installing the Aspire drivers.
    4,Disable Disk Cache
    5,Disable indexing
    6,Disable Paging
    7,Disable Hiberation
    8,Disable System Restore
    9,Install the drivers.

    Avast + Comodo Firewall
Firefox 2.0.0.16 (this version is the fastest on the One)

Yeah, I know it should only work on hdd's but the thing is that after uninstalling sp3 and going back to sp2 (win update method) my hard disk was so slow... 2MB/s write speed :x I didn't take a pic of the test.

I left it defragmenting all night and then the speed shows as "normal" 6MB/s write 37MB/s read...

My winxp sp2 loading time is 1 min 40 secs, from winxp logo to being able to use any program.

i've just reinstalled xp with fat32 and have noticed a fairly significant speed increase. that said, it's still a lot slower than i would have expected. i hope acer get back to us with something positive here!

If you're that displeased just use the FBWF mod that was already posted...
    viewtopic.php?f=6&t=179

After this mod it runs without any stalls at all.

i can see the benefits of that implementation, but it's not really a long-term fix for the issues that we're having. of course, i'm very interested to know exactly why SSD writes tend to be so slow and painful.

Actually that ssd speed is in the specifications...(don't have the link right now, but if you search the model that is written on the ssd via google you should get to the page). So we just have a slow ssd. Actually i'm kinda happy without Fbwf or Ewf and fat32

OK, this is my WinXP install/configuration:

    - Disabled D2D in BIOS.
    1. Installed XPSP2 from USB, formatted with FAT32.
    2. Installed SP3 from file afterwards.
    3. Installed all drivers (Webcam did not work with the Lite-On, but with the Suyon (?) drivers - works just fine)
    4. Installed Firefox 3 (latest update), installed ~10 extensions.
    5. Disabled System Restore, paging file, prefetch, SSD cache, hibernation.
    6. Disabled disk_cache in Firefox (about:config).

WiFi works great, had _no_ issues with battery drivers or anything else during install.

I kept the Xp firewall, don't need anything else. Installed BitDefender antivirus. I have 1GB RAM (512+512) and the system has ~700MB free RAM almost all the time. I have ~4.5GB free space left. No defragment, as I confirmed this through lots of googled opinions.

The system works like a charm. All windows operations work fast (folder/file operations, program starts etc.). Firefox 3 works fine, completely in a normal way. It slows down a bit when viewing websites with a lot of pics (intarfacelift, deviantart) but this is due to the disabled caching. Will try today how Portable Firefox 3 performs on the One.

When I used Linpus Lite, of course it booted and shutdowned faster, but I cannot see _any_ difference with normal OS/programs operations. It works fast and stable. It goes into standby in <10sec, and comes alive in about the same time. It is perfectly usable, even more than I had expected.

Skype works great with VoIP and video.

All-in-all, this turnes out be the best investment I have made in a log time

I installed xp from usb-stick. When I try to boot from SSD it says "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.."

So, am I missing some driver or what's the deal? =)

    It boots nicely from usb-stick.

    Great tips to follow.
By turning off page files and restore, my Aspire One runs much faster.
I will pick up a 1G DDR2 this weekend to see how much performance I can gain.
Can anyone tell the difference after upgrading to 1.5G of RAM?

This problem occurrs when the SSD was labeled drive D:/ and the usb-stick as drive C:/ which will make XP unbootable by it self unless you plug the usb-stick in.

I am not sure how to fix it after you install it, but I would re-install it and make sure the SSD is labeled drive C:/ when you are at partitioning part of the setup.

    Control Panel, System
    Advanced tab
    Performance group, Settings button
    Advanced tab
    Virtual Memory group, Change button
Select "No paging file" and click Set, then OK.

    Hi,
I installed XP but, during installation XP prompted only for ntfs and fat as format options. How can I format the ssd to fat32 during installing XP from usb stick? I need it because everyone says it's much more fast.
    Thanks.

If you pick FAT, Windows will detect the SSD and say it will format it as FAT32
