Launch Manager now released for Windows 7 on the Acer web site. This allows on screen display when adjusting things like volume, etc. Not a huge deal, but nice to get more support for Windows 7. Found it by selecting Windows 7 as the OS just above the download selections (which is new to the OS list). Enjoy...

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone, for posting these great tips and updates that would take me a hours to figure out myself (if ever).

    And:

You probably will not be able to install a 64bit OS, since the Z520 has a 32bit instruction set http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35466

    Regards

This is correct, you cannot install a 64-bit OS on 32-bit hardware. It just won't install.

    They'll have 64-bit netbooks soon.

New Card Reader and Bluetooth Windows 7 Drivers on the Acer download site. I'm not gonna install as everything seems to be working fine with the default drivers installed on a fresh Win 7 installation. Only drivers I have manually installed are the latest Win 7 Synaptics driver, R234 Realtek HDA driver (don't install 235; it breaks the internal mike), and the LaunchManager from the Acer site. Win 7 installs the .2011 version of the GMA 500. Hope that helps all.

    Battery life under Windows 7?

Can you guys offer some advice to someone contemplating the Win 7 upgrade?

    1) Have you been getting similar battery life after switching to Windows 7? I've seen articles showing both decreased and increased battery life depending on the notebook.

    2) Has anyone switched from Vista Basic to Win 7 on the Acer 751? Is it worth the bother? I've got Vista streamlined nicely now and it runs well. Will I gain any real-world benefits that make it worth taking 2 days to reconfigure my system again?

    1) don't know, installed win 7 after a couple of hours

    but

    2) yes, I obviously have, and I think it is Much faster, and I did "streamline" Vista before I installed Win 7

    • Is this still correct?

Update has installed a driver version 8.14.10.2011, which logically would seem to be newer as it is a higher number.

Anyone got a definite idea as to the latest driver under Win7?

Re: Battery life under Windows 7?

Thanks! I haven't seen complaints about battery life yet, so I guess that means whatever changes may be happening, it's nothing major on the positive or negative side.

I upgraded to 2gb ram right after I bought my Acer 0751. More ram made a big difference.

Win 7 is as efficient on my machine as the xp was before it.

The best part is finally getting HD video to run on it!

I also added a 2gb sd as ready boost.

With the Aero turned off this is a fun little machine. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor told me that it wouldn't support Aero but it was on when I finished with all the updates. Performance increased dramatically with it turned off so I'll never turn it on again.

Realtek just released R2.36 of their High Definition Audio drivers for Vista and Win 7. I had previously uninstalled R2.35 because it broke the internal mike (went back to R2.34). However the internal mike problem is fixed in R2.36 :D

I also decided to install the Broadcom Bluetooth driver from the Acer site since the default Windows 7 driver was a generic one dated in 2006. All works as before.

I tried to attach a screen snip of my current drivers, but the board quota is apparently reached, so here are my driver versions and dates for my Windows 7 HP install:

Realtek HDA: 6.0.1.5969, dated 10/28/2009 (downloaded from Realtek site)
Intel GMA 500: 8.14.10.2011, dated 08/27/2009 (updated thru Windows Update)
Broadcom Bluetooth: 6.2.0.9000, dated 06/15/2009 (downloaded from Acer site)
Atheros AR5007EG Wireless: 8.0.0.238, dated 10/05/2009 (updated thru Windows Update)
Realtek PCIe LAN: 7.6.820.2009, dated 08/20/2009 (updated thru Windows Update)
Synaptics Touchpad: 14.0.3.0, dated 08/27/2009 (downloaded from Synaptics site)

I decided not to install the WLAN, LAN, chipset, or cardreader drivers provided on the Acer site as everything is working ok (and some drivers on the Acer site are older). I may try later on. If so, I'll report back.

Hey guys, maybe you can help me with a question that is troubling me...

QUESTION: If you do a clean install of Windows 7, does it kill your original recovery partition?

Only if you delete the partition. When you go to install windows, you are shown all partitions on your drive and asked where you want to install windows as well as given the option to delete any partitions.

If you don't delete the recovery partition it should stay there ok.

Thank you for the information. Time to download that Win 7 upgrade, now that I know I can restore some kind of operating system if things go badly.

Ok, if I installed Win 7 and I didn't like it and wanted to go back to XP and my original installation, how would I access this so-call "recovery partition" to do a recovery?

SYSTEM RESTORE FROM THE RECOVERY PARTITION: You press and hold F10 while restarting your computer (sometimes it takes a couple of tries to "take" if you don't start holding F10 soon enough). Basically, there is an 8 GB section of the HDD that contains all of your original installation files. This section is bootable, but only boots if you are holding F10 when the BIOS screen first appears after a restart. If you initiate a system restore, it will wipe the rest of your hard drive completely, so don't mess with it unless you want a clean install of Windows and all of the original programs that shipped with your computer.

By the way, I'm installing Windows 7 right now. You can get the "student version" for $29.99 if you still have an academic email address that works (anything that is .edu). The email address is the only check that you are a student. Here is the *highly obnoxious* website: http://www.win741.com/

How many times can you use this restore partition? Just once? Or does it stay there unless you delete it?
