    silver discs fine
    Dvd-r sometimes stubborn.
DVD dual layer some do many dont, majority of DL were made on DVD pvr, all play fine.

Drive goes cachunk cachunk trying to read a file, finding either a whack or eject reload it finally reads.

Tried backup or burn to DVD - fails,
Tried on another laptop - works fine.

    Any ideas
    Cleaned lens, laptop is clean

Maybe considering external blu burner anyway
5 year old laptop so maybe handy, laptop still healthy
    Windows 7

    Thanks in advance

It's more than likely the drive that's the problem.

First try updating the dvd driver

You can load another piece of writer software on the machine without
removing the program you are using..

Try this small program it works great (anyburn)

used the computers diagnostic, driver was fine up to date

haven't tried another burner suggestion yet

650 GB, 400 GB free , 64 bit, 8 GB, should that be enough

last successful burns were 3 cd-rs with (mp3s in folders)
and a dual layer copy of a dvd contents (ifo vob that kind of thing)

(right now) trying a 4.3 dvd , 7 mins est started, stuck at 5 mins for last 30 min, can actually feel the drive vibrate when the high speed of the burn is required.
typical drop files and burn in My Computer, am very tempted to spit it out, i'll stick it out but i bet another fail is coming.

admittedly this one is burning from external HDD WD elements, but having said that previous fail was from contents on computer HDD, more like i'm testing rather than seriously doing a burn.

am only typing this reply and that's all i'm doing while this burn is attempted

let you know how it goes, now up to 4 mins

    hopefully that info helps

    Burn failed.
    * use previous post as duration of burn

Was halfway bar but still 4 min went to finalising, 5 min, then " not responding" and " "there was a problem burning the disc"

Had done defrag before latest try after reading up solutions

Was thinking back up then wipe the HDD and do a reinstall

For give my average tech-talk, just trying to work it out based on my experience and what I've read

I know it's so frustrating when a few dvd's fail to write.

This may sound that I am doubting you but as you said you managed
to write on the silver disks.

Are you sure you drive is capable of writing to dvd's, and not just cd's ?

It won't help reformatting the system then starting again.

    Try that other writing program

    it's a Toshiba laptop
It has its own disc creator (backup, copying etc) and I made copies of dvd-r only releases and were fine, around 30mins for the process was the average time.
Mailnly during the last year it's started, but I've never constantly burned movies every week, I've got the DVD recorder for that.

    What I use,
silver verbatims, then silver and gold tdks, then verbatim printables (white) and 3 times mcr? dual layers (yellow drum had heaps at Harvey Norman, they're great, primary used on my DVD recorder)
Cd-rs/rws tdks and the odd verbatims
    * like everybody else once the tdks were disappearing off the shelves in the last few years went to verbatims.

    Windows 7, probably bought 2011.

    Any help

    SEE PHOTO

    Might have found a problem

I thought along the computer must be fine after what I've tried, and was suspicious it might be the DVD "player"
Then i looked at the spindle, the spring clips are fine but what about the fingers between each spring clip COULD they be starting to fatigue given it is 6 years old.

I gave them a feel, still solid, loaded a cd on feels solid not loose, but removing still Solid but not tight solid

Am I getting close to a solution.

    Any opinions
