I installed Sunbird in the /opt directory. And now I want it to show up on the desktop or in the menu when I right-click.
When I right-click the sunbird program and choose 'send to desktop (create link)', nothing happens.

are you using the default acer desktop? if so you need to edit an xml file to get it to show up.

If you are using the "kiddie free" version then you mihgt need to locate the .desktop fie and move it to the desktop folder

    I'm in advanced mode.
I don't see a .desktop icon in the sunbird folders. I downloaded the zipped file from mozilla, unzipped it, and copied the folders/files as is to /opt.

How did you do that? The terminal tells me 'no package sunbird available'.

    I finally got it.
    I had to do
    Code:
    sudo yum -y update fedora-release
    before doing the yum install.
Thanks for trying to help me.

isn't this repo update thingy supposed to screw up your system? i read on other threads that some folk were doing this update and then reported problems with dependencies and such...some even had their system broken...

No, the repo update solves the problems.

What you read about was someone who issued " sudo yum update" without specifying the package to update. That tries to update every single package on the system to the latest fedora 8 version. Which, since Linpus Lite is NOT a standard fedora 8 system causes problems.
