Super slow just before update required

My laptop is 5 years old now. (What's that in laptop years?) It's running slow but I've done a few suggestions that sped it up a bit. The real problem is just before it says update required please restart its glacial for hours before the update is ready to do.I couldn't do my paper work yesterday. Is there anything that can be done to speed it up before the update? To be honest it only works when plugged in the wall as the battery doesn't work anymore so the answer may be get a new one.
