I've just bought an AAO 150ab. Primarily as a dump for my files, but I'd also like to do the initial sifting and removal of out of focus, badly composed images using it.

I however so impressed with the performance of the machine as is (Limpus Lite OS) that I would like to leave that OS on there even though I have never used any Linux variants before.

I've downloaded the Gimp from the Acer web site so that installed with no user intervention, but it does not know about Adobe DNG RAW files and there doesn't appear to be a Fedora 8 version plug-in of UFRAW on the GIMP web site.

I've downloaded the Picasa 3 photo processing tool from Google which does handle the files and for which there is a Fedora 8 version. But I'm now at a complete loss as the .rpm file causes a password prompt to come up that I can't get past. Does anyone know:

    1. Can this version of Picaasa to be installed under Limpus?
    2. What is the procedure to get the .rpm installed?
    3. Are there any other RAW processors that will (easily) install on Limpus?

Hope you can help as I'm going to Canada at the end of the month and want to take this fully prepared for what I know will be hundreds of photos I will

    Many thanks

    Neil

Hi, have only just started to get to know about all things linux, but I found a package called ufraw-gimp and downloaded that. (From the package Manager) It's a plug-in and sounds just what you need? Also I downloaded picasa 3 and didnt have problems but decided I didnt need it and got rid of it. If you go to : http://picasa.google.com/linux/download.html#picasa30 : you will notice there are 2 versions you can download, you need the * rpm, for Red Hat/Fedora/Suse/Mandriva i386 or x86_64: or the older version at the top (it has a link to the 2.7 version. ) Good Luck.

Edit :- PS I think the password you are talking about is the one you use when you first start up your AAO. ???
Have just reinstalled Picasa 3 and it all works (takes a bit of time though!) and also I found it is hidden i.e. it's not in the drop down menus? but if you click on Run Program, and type in picasa and hit run it appears (takes a while first time round because its registering etc!) Be patient.

    hi

I am currently running the Window98 1.5 ram version of the AAO and I am working through Picassa as a catalog that is created when I use a USB CF reader from a Canon 400D , from this I then process the RAWs via Irfanview to get some immediate product , I tend to review the shots on the AAO and then transfer to a western digital passport external HD.

If I want to photoshop I then hook it to the home workstation, but still use picasa as a catalog.

this allows me to use the AAO as a storage machine that has lasted a four month asian journey.

My only real customisation to the machine has been the addition of the RAM and the cutting down of the power leads for storage in my backpack (crumpler are a great bag , and very comfy)

The AAO is a great addition to my photogrpahic life, and wouldnt be without anywhere nowadays, even if just carrying around my click and point.

Actually the question should be "Are you going to share whatever it is you are smoking/drinking/eating/Injecting ?"
Because it must be some real good stuff... :D

I don't mind using an older operating system like Windows XP, but at least that is still supported by Microsoft. I don't think the same applies to Windows 98. Do things like the webcam and microphone work in that platform? What photo software works with that also?

Bought the Samsung LD220 LCD lapfit-screen to support my AA1 netbook at home. Always have the AA1 in my backpack next to the camera while i'm out, shooting. The AA1 Makes quick reviewing possible. But it does not support the resolutions needed for some editing programs.
The LD220 gets it's digital screen data over USB connection. Its native resolution is 1920X1080. Editing programs work fine on this screen !

You do realise that you didn't need a screen that uses USB for the screen data ? The VGA connector on your AAO supports external displays with resolutions up to 2048x1536.

Of course, but VGA is analogue, USB is digital, an there certainly is a difference in image quality. It was the only way to get digital screendata from the AA1 because it has no DVI nor HDMI.

    AA1 Update

Sorry to say fellow 8.9 enthusiasts, I have retired my AA1 (AAO) as my photo-companion several months ago. It lasted about a year. Reason: repeated BIOS screen blackout problems starting with original BIOS 35/3114.

The unit failed in India - black screen - and a new US factory BIOS revived it. Several outings later it died first day on my desk after I returned home from Far East. I tried everything: "Macles" internet methods, local computer store tried my revival method and failed, I tried again - nothing. I looked everywhere for revival methods but nothing, but nothing worked. I got run around at Tech Support and eventually an offer of paid help ($60-odd?) as I was outside warranty period.

I dug out the hard drive, mounted it in a docking station and I was able to retrieve all work, which was, in any case, backed up. However, as a pro I am not prepared to travel with equipment which has twice completely broken down on duty.

You may be interested to know that I eventually bought an Asus eeepc 1000HE, dropped the Aspire 500gb WD upgrade drive straight in (through an easy rear panel door) and it booted right away into XP - all I had to do was add the Asus drivers. Unit has been running perfectly OK ever since.

So here's the thing if you are modifying, chomping or altering your AA1 and looking for parts, I have broken the Acer ZG5, AOA 150-1570, and items are on eBay April 11-18, 2010. Start at auction number 110518749535 the LCD/blue case, and other items listed, include power supply, battery, keyboard, hard drive, 1gb sodimm memory etc.

'Twas a great little unit and it was love at first sight. I still like it for it's travel-size, but I must have a reliable BIOS and no black screens.
