I just bought an Acer Aspire One with the intent og giving it a try, with a pretty good dea I would not like the performance. Walmart had it on display, priced at $298. The specs didn't look right to me, listing the processor speed at 1.6 GHZ, 1 GB System Memory and 160 GB storage and Win XP Home. That just couldn't be right, especially the storage...

So I threw down and went honme fully expecting to find a very minimal, bare bones system that could maybe handle email and moderate web surfing tasks.

Well, the specs were as advertized with one exception. The system memory is actually 1.5 GB. Except for having a little difficulty getting used to the smaller keyboard and the audio volume is too low for my ears, this thing is a HOSS!!! Headphones fixed the audio issue and the keyboard works pretty darn well, with a little practice.

I loaded Office, Adobe Pagemaker, Photoshop and some other stuff and put it through it's paces. I figured some Photo editing ought to bring this thing to is knees, but I was flabbergasted with the Acer's performance. I tried one last thing to choke this thing by setting it up with my Slingbox wirelessly. Surprized again, got TV on the Acer Aspire One perfectly.

I am amazed. My old laptop is being donated to my wife. When I travel, I will be travelling with the Aspire One, to heck with lugging around a regular laptop. This thing rocks.

Thanks for letting me rant a bit...

Excellent feedback, Agree that I didn't expect such performance of Atom 1.6 GHz.. As traveler Google earth works as (if not better) than my old P4 desktop PC, I love navigation through AAO due to Arrows, Pg Up/Down buttons close to each other! :D

The only problem for me is heating  and fan noise  if you run long videos as example, but most laptops have the same problems.

As for specs The storage advertised as 160 GB but I don't know why on mine shows 143 GB!

The hdd is 160GiB. 160GiB = roughly 145GB. So... there's nothing wrong with the capacity.

Dito on the "love my AA1". I purchased it just as a knock around laptop and now I use it as my primary PC lol. I do photo editing, graphics editing and auto CAD as well as design websites.

For the fan problem you can download AA1fan control but then it does run a little hotter. I solved that a bit by making a copper heatsink which was pretty involved though.

Have fun with your new micro PC :D

BTW, below is a pic of my AA1 as my desktop PC replacement. I have USB floppy, CD and HD for it ;) All parts from older computers that work just fine.
