On my previous notebooks with a Synaptics touchpad, I was always able to go "forward" and "backward" a page using a swipe across the top of the touchpad in Internet Explorer and (with some modification) Firefox.

I can't find this setting for the touchpad on the AAO. Am I just overlooking this setting?

I checked and discovered that swiping left and right along the bottom of the touchpad generates buttons 6 and 7, so I was able to change mine to behave the way you describe using the info below (from http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Mou ... nd+Forward):
Since you mentioned IE, you may be using Windows and so this might not help...but the hardware can definitely do it.

Alternatively, you could use tap zones which are availabe under the Synaptics settings. Tapping on a particular corner of the touchpad could send the back or forward command to your browser.
