Ok, i will sound such a n00b but what exactly this script does? It changes your Desktop to a clean open one where you can change icons and backgrounds more easy?

sudo yum install gcc-c++ make imlib2-devel
    tar xvfj wbar-1.3.3.tbz2
    cd wbar-1.3.3
    make

    BUt when iget to this:

    sudo make install

spent the morning trying to do this..

All thats happened is I get a small button that says:
    "Could not run 'change desktop'
Failed to execute child process "Changedesktop" (No such fire or directory)

Any idea what I did wrong?

    EDIT
One thing I've realised isn't working is I'm struggling to move the file into /usr/local/bin/
tried the sudu mv changedesktop /usr/local/bin but I get bash: Sudu: command not found

also tried copying word for word the way from downloads and this didn't work. I just have two buttons that don't do anything :s

Okay, I got it sorted now. I just have to use Alt F2 Changedesktop in stead of pushing a button, now I just need to work out how to make the short cuts :)

    Hi…

I did some of the hacks mentioned above and everything seemed to be working normally. However, one thing I noticed is that the expansion card upgrade has to be done manually everytime I turn on the laptop. I mean, I added an 8-gb SD card in the storage expansion slot and it has been read as part of the SSD before the hacks I did. Now, I have to change the viewing of the side panel to “advanced mode” and then back again to “standard mode” before the laptop recognizes the additional 8 gb of storage. When I turn off the laptop and on again, it goes back to not detecting the expansion SD card.

What can I do to fix this?

    Thanks!

Re: Switch acer desktop <-> xfce

    Dear members,

I have just discovered this wonderful forum..
I followed instructions posted to create a panel icon which would change the acer desktop to the xfce desktop.
This worked fine although i found the new desktop to be very basic indeed.
Looking at screenshots it seems evident this desktop is customizable (e.g. the mac style icons floating at the bottom) so i wanted to go further.
I then tried a different method following instructions from this guide

    http://jorge.fbarr.net/2008/08/06/acer- ... ultdesktop

my aspire one loads up and everything seems normal in this new desktop mode. like a blank canvas, i can still access the original acer desktop with the panel icon created earlier (perhaps this is causing a problem)

however many of the functions are no longer working.. i cannot open a file manager window (when i try one loads up but closes immediately), i can access the right click advanced menu and go into firefox or the terminal but not thunar.. in the settings menu i can access panel manager but desktop settings???

if anyone has any advice i would be very grateful..
this is my first linux machine i've had it since december and have gotten as far as to install vlc, xmms, firefox 3..

    thanks, sheponet

    Hi,

I'm new to this Linux thing but I'm getting to grips with it and I like it! :D

Is there a way to get it to change the desktop wallpaper back to the default acer one when switching back from xfce to the default desktop? i.e I swithed to the new xfce desktop and customised the wallpaper but when I switch back I might want to keep the original desktop image as it is integrated nicely with the acer desktop.

Also, my new wallpaper image, which resides in the /home/user/pictures directory, doesn't appear automatically after reboot, and I get left with a blank faded blue background. Can anyone help please?!

    Cheers, James

P.S. Now that I have changed my wallpaper, can someone please remind me where the original AspireOne background image is - I didn't take nte and now I want to restore it.

    Hello all,

I just bought myself a Aspire One with Linpus and trying to customize it :) I got Advance Mode working and also the desktop switch, but still have a few problems. There is a stupid search field on my desktop, backgroud is the same as the Acer desktop had. How to remove this?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: Sorry for the trouble. Found the answer!

    Hi from a new member.

I've been happily using my AA1 for a few months, but a combination of LiveUpdate and installing mobile parter recently broke it (the 'Item not configured' star thing). So I've restored using the backup DVD via a boot USB.

I want to set the xfce desktop again. I don't ever want to switch to or see the acer panels. And I've tried the various ways to enable the xfce desktop.

I can confirm that ALL of them break aufs. An SD card in the expansion slot doesn't get recognized with the xfce desktop. Worse than that, NO usb storage is recognised either. Switching back to the tonka-toy acer desktop immediately fixes it

And yet.... I had this working fine with the xfce desktop before the restore. There must be some way to do it. I've tried with the straight restore from DVD, and also after installing all Live Updates - no difference.

Has anyone found the way to get this working?
