I'm still waiting patiently for the Acer Aspire One with Windows XP and it still probably won't be in US like in 3-4 weeks. I heard that the only reason the Acer Aspire One XP is delayed is because Microsoft relaxed the restriction for Windows XP being installed on computer with hard drive larger than 80GB. If Acer would have stuck to the 80GB HDD as they originally planned instead of going for 120GB, and BTW who need that much space anyway, the Acer Aspire One with XP would have been available by now.

Yep. I'm in Canada; have pre-ordered a blue 120GB Linplus 512mb model from NCIX. And waiting ...

As far as I can tell, it'll ship on the 15th. That means I have it in hand in about three weeks. That also means I'm waiting another 3 weeks.

    Sigh

ditto on that one. c'mon, though, 120gb is better than 80gb (microsoft is the real bitch to blame on the delay - why put such dinky frickin restrictions on netbooks anyway?). at least it'll run xp properly. i threw in the extra $5 for 2-day shipping, though, so i'm hoping i'll get mine soon after they arrive at the warehouse.

I'm with you bro... on preorder, waiting not-so-patiently for mid-August.

What are you guys paying for the XP version btw? It's 54,800 yen -10% store credit for me, free shipping. About $500 I guess.

i ordered on buy.com and had a 5% coupon, so i ended up paying $385. I don't know why it seems the winxp version is so much cheaper in the states. probably microsoft screwing everyone over again.

So, I'm not the only one counting the days until it's released, eh? How will we survive the next three weeks? Here's hoping everyone at Acer has already taken their summer vacation and is back at work.

I'm definitely in on the waiting business too...but I leave for school on August 23rd so it's like right on the edge of whether I'll ship it to my house or get it while I'm on campus. I'm hoping it gets here early!

Hope this does not sound like rubbing in. I got mine yesterday, at the tradeshow ACER introduced the new machine at (in Taiwan). xP, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, 6 cell and what an amazing, cool (temp-wise) run time.

Spoke to ACER reps and a few things are sure: (1) They got way too many preorders so it will go to ACER dealers and top sellers in the first 3-6 months. Most cheapie online places are not even dealers (they buy through brokers), so may wait even longer. (2) These A1's are built by ACER factories, not outsourced, and they are running full capacity with all other laptops for Christmas, so don't expect A1 production to go up too much, because it is really not that profitable for ACER. (3) They kept prices low just to keep ASUS eee in sight, but with battery shortage and xP prices, don't expect prices to come down (they might add more features and up the price) anytime soon. (4) Due to shortage of batteries they will ship more 3 cells than 6 cells, so be aware of what you are getting. 6-cells is the way to go to get max portability. (5) They are going to manage the launch like Wii, which means most will be pre-sales (don't expect instant gratification). I only got mine because I got it at the intro show. And soon after I got it home my college-bound son made it his. He was going to get a 12" SONY but liked the A1 better because of super long run time (whole day of class, Facebook, chats, music without needing to plug in).

I have often experienced online orders cancelled or indefinitely postponed, because resellers priced it too low and not able to get the products (from factories or brokers). So best to deal with ACER or their full line dealers directly. With an hot product like this you are not going to save much buying from an online place anyway, so might as well buy from an ACER backed dealer, and know who you can take it to in case something happens. They not only let me boot up the machine and tried it out until I am happy, but tossed in 1 extra year of warranty with it. Hope you all get yours real soon.

Good advice, agree totally, and thanks for your report.

Though it may be that in North America the popularity isn't quite the same intensity. The first run of Linux models appears to have gone smoothly with no shortages.

Thanks for the great info. Can we assume that a retailer selling them at full price (e.g. NCIX) will be on the priority list?

I wouldn't say that full price retailers will get ahead of internet shops, but authorized dealers will for sure get ahead of brokers, which don't really serve any companies any purpose except to clear surpluses. So the smaller Internet outfits definitely will get left out.

Acer will probably still use major internet shops (like NewEgg) to promote the product, but supplies will be low for sure. Nintendo did the same thing to launch the Wii, and even today still are doing mainlly pre-sell biz. So I am sure every electronic company will copy Nintendo's launch. Of course, pc's shelf life is much shorter than a Wii, but I am sure that is why companies keep upping the content and upping the prices to keep things fresh and desirable.

I still think ACER CEO is on something illegal when he say 5-6 million A1 will be ship this year. I am in the semicon biz, you cannot possibly come up with that many Atom chips, low power components (from HD, capacitors, to LCD), batteries, etc. in 12 months, with all other suppliers hungry for the same parts.

And don't forget the Eee Box which uses the same components (minus the LCD and batteries). It will sell a lot because it's really what most people need for PC, and it's cheap.

Coincidently all the A1's available for Taiwan launch were gone before the end of day 2.

Good news the A1 is a great machine. Battery time and running temp are just amazing. Did a McAfee scan and took battery down only by 30% (with HD running full time for maybe 2 hours). Slow as hell but did not even make it hot or anything. So keep the faith. It's worth waiting for.

The shipping date for the Japanese XP version has been revised -at the store I ordered it from at least - from "middle August" to "late August".
